I was very sceptical about this one as I havent really watched the TV show before and after recent forays to the cinema to see animated TV shows on the big screen, on the whole I have been disappointed and end up thinking, well they just dont do it like Disney.
Well how did Rugrats fair, Well it certainly wasnt Disney, but it didnt have to be. This film was one of the best animated films I have seen in a long time. The children all have there own very individual characters, but the whole notion of finding Chuckie a 'mommy' is bound to appeal to kids in this day and age, where there is no such thing as mum, dad and 2.4 kids anymore. At one point my daughter was in tears, and i too felt very emotional when Chuckie was singing about his mom and seeing her face in the clouds, as it put an animated spin and a child's perspective on what is actually a very real situation and feeling for a great many children.
The comedy value of the film was brilliant. I laughed until I cried. Angelica as the Godfather was pure genius and the use of Disneys Lady and the Tramp and the comment 'I hate it when they sing' was a cool pop at Disney. The final scenes where the children were in a giant reptar rushing to save Chuckies dad pursued up and down the Eiffel Tower my a giant mechanical snail was pure cartoon madness, but very well put together. But the green trumps emitting from one of the babies bottoms after they had munched there way through a tonne of green goo was by far the funniest moment. You could almost smell it.
A great film for half term. Im a convert to the Rugrats phenomenon after seeing this films. These little guys show the world from a kids point of view and one actually thinks this might be how children actually see the world.
The kids want to see it again, which is always a good sign.

Advantages: wonderfully told story that'll be a gem on video Disadvantages: woefully short on screen, and still has that "TV" feel of an episode.. you can just hear the tie ins coming...
