Shortly after the birth of my second child I decided to enrol at my local Rosemary Conley class to help shift the excess pounds I’d put on during my pregnancy. I had tried various diets in the past, but had never stuck to them finding them far too strict or difficult to incorporate with the rest of my family’s meals. I always ended up going back to my old habits soon after becoming bored with the regime. However, the Rosemary Conley diet was different – so much easier to follow and the whole family could enjoy it too. However, while the change of diet helped me on my way back to my slimmer self, I found the exercise classes that are part of the Rosemary Conley diet class were more beneficial. I was becoming much fitter as a result, and I was also making lots of friends as well as toning up my flabby bits.
Once I had reached my target weight, I still watched what I ate, and also went along to the fitness classes twice a week just to make sure I didn’t slip into my old ways again. I had found a class that I loved and I didn’t think I’d ever find myself saying that. I had always gone to aerobics classes where there were stick thin Lycra clad women who always stood in front of the mirror admiring themselves and they always had the uncanny knack of making you feel inferior as you walked into the room. This class was much different, there were no little cliques and nobody laughed if you couldn’t keep in time.
Just as I was enjoying my little routine,
my whole world fell apart at the seams. The lady that used to take our class decided that it was eating too much into her social life so felt she had to give up her franchise. Knowing that the nearest Rosemary Conley class was over 100 miles away, drastic measures were called for.
While I have a few fitness videos and DVDs collecting dust at home, I decided I would use some Amazon vouchers to purchase Rosemary Conley’s whole body workout video. A few days later it arrived on my doorstep and made its way into my living room.
This fitness video comes in three parts:
The first is an aerobic fat-busting routine, which lasts for 30 minutes. Included in this routine is a lengthy warm up session and this makes sure that your joints and muscles are ready for action. While Rosemary Conley might conjure up images of a WI leader serving up scones and tea at a village fete, this could be nothing further than the truth as you press play on your machine. While I first thought that the background music would be cheesy and something that you would expect to be playing on Classical FM I was pleasantly surprised to hear that it was quite upbeat and funky. Tracks by the likes of Steps, Yazz and Boyzone were present giving it a thoroughly modern feel to it. Along with Rosemary are 4 ladies who all play an important role in this video. Each one has their own fitness level starting from beginner working up to more advanced. Depending on your own level of fitness you will be able to decide which of the lady’s routines you want to follow.
As the fitness routine progresses there is a timer on screen that you can keep your eye on to see how much time you have left. I must admit the first time I watched the clock I found myself thinking it was lasting forever, but as I got used to the routine I found that the time passed quite quickly and I began to thoroughly enjoy the session.
If like me you have 2 left feet and find it difficult to pick up new routines or steps, then there is no need to worry. Before each session, Rosemary spends a few minutes showing you the more difficult steps making it easier for you.
Part 2 takes you onto the full body toning session and this one lasts 20 minutes. Rosemary is back with her 4 assistants and again you choose which one you want to follow. For this routine weights can be used on your ankles and wrists to give more resistance when working out. If you don’t have any weights, don’t worry about having to fork out money on expensive ones, a couple of tins of beans or water bottles will do the trick. Just like the first session, the warm up lasts a few minutes making sure that all your muscles are stretched so no damage is caused – while you might be able to do the exercises without warming up, you will suffer the next day if not following it, so be warned.
Again, the music is fairly upbeat and modern and works well with the routine. This session works at toning your muscles and while the routines are gentle, they are very effective and over the next few weeks you will see a vast improvement. One part I found particularly beneficial was the section aimed at tummies. Having had 2 children, I felt the muscle tone on my stomach had seen better days. A couple of months after using the video and I’m very pleased with the results.
The third and final part is aimed towards people who are perhaps not as able bodied as yourself, maybe they are pregnant, elderly or confined to a wheelchair. This routine lasts about 20 minutes and is centred around a chair as the whole routine is done sitting down. I haven’t actually done this routine, but have watched it through and it looks pretty straightforward – again there are different routines to follow depending on your level of fitness. Once again, the music is modern and not in any way dated.
While the video has been split in 3 sections, you can still do them all together. I just do the first two, as I don’t feel I would benefit from the last one. When I first started using it, there was no way I could manage to do both of them, but now I have progressed well and have even upgraded my choice of lady to follow.
Having used this video for just over 3 months I am very pleased with the results. It had been about 6 months since I’d set foot in an exercise class and while I thought I was fit after running after 2 young children, it’s surprising how wrong I was. The first couple of times using the video I felt like giving up especially as there was a clock ticking away the seconds like they were hours, but now I look forward to playing the video every other day and following the routines. I find the exercise video very enjoyable, and Rosemary comes across as being very professional and caring and not intimidating in any way.
I paid the fantastic price of £5.97 for the video plus a small charge for P&P from Amazon.co.uk. Rosemary Conley’s Whole Body Workout is also available on DVD and can be found on the high street in shops such as Woolworth’s and WH Smiths, as well as some supermarkets. Expect to pay in the regions of £7.99 for it.
All in all I am very pleased with this video, unlike the others in my collection that make good ornaments, this one is used at least twice a week and I use it in conjunction with my healthy eating plan. With Christmas a mere memory this is just the thing to help me with my New Year’s Resolution, to slim back into my bikini in time for my summer holidays.

Are you still sticking with it now? I find myself full of enthusiasm for things like this for the first few weeks and then they just gather dust on the shelf! I don't think anything could help my tummy after having a baby as it's full of saggy skin! x
