SYNOPSIS = Dr. Joyce Reardon, a psychology professor, leads a team of six psychics into an isolated mansion known as Rose Red. Her efforts resurrected the spirit of former owner Ellen Rimbauer and soon, the discovery of the horrifying secrets of those who lived and died there. Never be alone, as the house is forever changing and growing. An exit may be there for one minute and the next minute may be gone...
REVIEW = As much of a horror film fan, I am not always keen on Stephen King's materials. I often find them too slow and the ending seems to be weak at times. However, I thought I will give 'Rose Red' a try as I love movies about haunting houses (being a big fan of 'Most Haunted').
The duration of the film was approximately 4 hours long. As I was so gripped by the movie, I watch it all at once and it did not felt it was long at all. I was very impressed with how the story and character were laid out.
A lot of movies expect you to figure out any enigmas, whereas Rose Red is pretty much to the point, with no decoys. What you see is what you get and by the end of the movie, I wasn't frustrated with any unanswered questions. It was easy for my brain and you do need that after 4 hours of concentration.
I loved the fact that so much history was give to you about the house. It was creepy when you realise that the house is forever growing and that rooms and layout shifts about. You can easily get lost in the house, whether you are in a group or alone.
Personally, I like to know the layout of houses when I watch a film. If there was a chasing scene, I would have more of an understanding of where the victim was going. You do get to know a few memorable rooms in this film, such as the Mirror Floor Room and the Kitchen. This film does not allow the audience to understand the layout of rooms for very valid reasons - a) it's a mansion that is constantly growing b) the rooms shifts, etc. For these reasons, I can forgive the minor details.
What engages me about a huge haunted mansion is secret trap doors and Rose Red was no exception. It is always scary to be in a place, where you can get lost easily and not knowing where door leads to. You can emphathise with the characters and it enabled myslef to feel like I was one of the team.
The main characters were introduced slowly, with adequate insights about their history and persoanlity. I did feel the focus was so heavily on the house that a few of the characters died before you got to know them properly, such as Pam Asbury, played by Emily Deschanel.
The acting was sound and I was impressed with the fact that we as audience, went into the house slowly with a hint of the outside world still existing. There was plenty of 'outside' clips before the characters were fully in the house for good.
As with Stephen King's films, I am always interested in what cameo part he is going to play...this one will make you laugh.
I loved this movie and felt it was easy to watch despite the long duration. There is a good balance of humours and scary parts. The only thing I am questioning is whether they could have made it for cert 15, rather than 12. Yes, there was scary parts, but it just wasn't scary enough for me personally. This is definitely worth buying, and I bet you will want to watch it year after year.
