The storyline revolves around Romy White and Michele Weinberger, two dumb, ditzy American blondes. They are played by Mira Sorvino the Oscar-winning star of Mighty Aphoridte and ex-girlfriend of Oliver Martinez, otherwise known as Kylie's boyfriend, and Lisa Kudrow, who of course is Phoebe Buffay in Friends!
When Romy and Michele hear their old high school back in Tucson, Arizona are having a reunion, they jump at the chance. After all, this is their big chance to show their bitchy ex-classmates how fantastic their lives now are. They are now slim, pretty blondes living in Los Angeles whereas their old classmates are still stuck in Tucson, and they can't resist going back to flaunt their new lifestyles to the people who thought they were complete losers!
As they fill out the application form, it slowly dawns on them that their lives aren't as fabulous as they thought they were. They are nearing 30 and still living together with no boyfriends to speak of, and Michelle is jobless whereas Romy is just a car valet cashier. They decide to return to Tucson anyway, but decide to make over their lives in the two weeks before the reunion.
As the reunion approaches, their lives are still unimpressive despite slaving away at the gym, lots of boyfriend hunting and job-searching. Desperate times call for desperate measures and Romy, realising the 'A group' will still see her as a nobody, puts together new lives for her and Michele as rich, successful businesswomen who made their fortune inventing Post-It's!
As they drive to Tucson, the old schoolfriends have a massive argument and go their separate ways when they arrive at Sagebrush High. They are certain that with their mobile phone, flash car (borrowed) and slim, blonde figures, they will dazzle and impress their old schoolfriends. Romy hopes to win over her old crush Billy Christianson, whereas Michelle just want to avoid Sandy Frink, the weirdo who used to follow her around, but their plan doesn't quite work out that way!
Of course as this is an American romantic comedy, there's a moral in the story! Most of the underlying messages in chick flicks are cheesy and sugary enough to make you sick but I think the one in Romy and Michele is a good one. If you're happy with yourself, there's no need to change yourself for anybody, regardless of what people think.
There's nothing to hate about this film - it's so fluffy and adorable! There are some fabulous one-liners, especially from the bitter, chain-smoking, potty-mouthed Heather Mooney (Janeane Garafolo) who hated every minute of school but decided to return to see the love of her (school) life, Sandy Frink! She makes this film what it is - it would be nowhere as entertaining without her!
The film is incredibly believable and I'm sure most people would be able to relate to at least a little of it. Who hasn't met a snobby, jumped-up little witch like Christie Masters, or had an unrequited crush on somebody who didn't know you existed, like Heather? It's such a cute, little feel-good film. This film is definitely for anybody who ever felt inadequate at school!
Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are perfect in their roles as Romy and Michelle. Lisa pretty much plays the part of a younger Phoebe Buffay but nonetheless, that girl has comic timing and both actresses play their parts extremely well! It would have been so easy to make Romy and Michelle farcical and far-fetched, and in a way, they are, but it's in a good way. Their sheer stupidity gives the film a slightly surreal, escapist edge but I'm sure there are many real life Romy's and Michelle's in the world!
Alan Cumming is also worth a mention! I've seen him on V Graham Norton and he was lovely but it was Romy and Michelle that really drew my attention to him. He plays the part of Sandy Frink perfectly - geeky and awkward as the high-school Sandy, and as the older Sandy, he's self-assured, thanks to his millions, but his light-up trainers show he's still a bit nerdy at heart!
There's also a soundtrack available if you like the songs from the film. Normally I don't think soundtracks are that memorable and I never take any notice, but I have to admit, some of these songs are quite catchy! I recognise a few; Bananarama (sp?), Cyndi Lauper and Belinda Carlisle, and there's also some No Doubt at the start of the film! Not bad for a cheesy American comedy!
The film isn't for you if you like your humour sophisticated and dark, or crude and rude! Most of the humour comes from the stereotypical dumb blonde girls, and Heather Mooney who can't go one minute without hurling abuse at people. It's simple and even my eight year-old cousin enjoyed it but it does work!
It honestly leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy inside! The bullies finally receive their comeuppance and their teased, laughed-at and humiliated victims come out on top. No it's not realistic in the slightest but a film like Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion leaves no room for realism!
Go on, give it a go. It's a really sweet, enjoyable film and is great for 90 minutes of mindless fluff. Not ideal for small children really, because there's quite a bit of swearing - it's rated 12, but anyone 10 upwards should be fine! The only thing I'd say is that it looks a tiny bit outdated but seeing as it came out nearly nine years ago you can hardly complain!
Great stuff, and you can buy the DVD on Amazon for £5.99, but it's also on TV now and again if you don't want to pay for it before you've seen it. Maybe not for cynics or men (or cynical men) but if you're a girl, particularly if you didn't have a great time in high school, this is definitely worth a watch!
------------
Just a few quotes, so you understand the humour!
MICHELLE: Well at least we're not the ones that got fat! CHRISTIE: We're pregnant, you half-wit. MICHELLE: Yeah... well... I hope your babies look like monkeys!
ROMY: You have absolutely no proof that you're cuter! MICHELLE: Oh, proof; You want proof? Ok, fine. Who lost their virginity first? ROMY: Oh big wow, with your cousin Barry. I wouldn't brag about it!
ROMY: Oh my God! Remember what a big controversy it was for us to have our (yearbook)picture taken together? MICHELLE: Yeah, because Danny Weller lodged that complaint. Because alphabetically he was supposed to be between us. ROMY: So we said: "Okay Danny, if you want to be between us, come to Michelle's house on Friday night and we'll be waiting." MICHELLE: And then he showed up and we were like: "Danny, it was a joke!" ROMY: And then we turned the sprinklers on him! [both laugh] MICHELLE: Oh my God! [stops laughing] Didn't he die? ROMY: I think so.
Advantages: Hilarious, Nostalgic look at the 80's, Lisa Kudrow Disadvantages: A bit silly for some.
...plodding along with her life, Romy is at her work as normal when an old classmate turns up at the counter to pick up her Jaguar after it was in getting repaired. From this chance encounter, Romy finds out that her high school is having a 10 year reunion for her class! This is big news for Romy and her roommate (and life long friend) Michelle so they set too filling out the forms to register their intent to attend. However, problems arise when they ... ...is that Romy is a cashier, Michelle is unemployed and both of them are still single – surely they can’t go like that!
So, they embark on a few plans to get themselves better jobs, new men and loose weight, but nothing seems to work. But wait……Romy has a better plan up her sleeve…..
This film is silly. It’s implausible. It’s completely ridiculous but above all, its funny! The basic premise is that the two main characters are ditzy blondes with simple ...

...is a trendy comedy about Romy and Michelle's 10 year high school reunion. At reunions, everyone wants to come across as successful and happy in life. When filling out their reunion information sheets they realise, hang on...what have we done with our lives?
Here is a small section from that part of the film -
ROMY:"Do you think it's impressive that we're still single, and we've been living together for 10 years, and I'm a cashier and you're unemployed?"
... ...impress people?"
MICHELLE:"Well...eh..."
When Romy and Michelle were at Sagebrush High 10 years ago, they weren't successful or popular then either. Going to this reunion is their opportunity to show their old classmates how much they have improved their lives. Romy used to be over weight which she has now lost and Michelle was constantly teased by the A group for having a backbrace which is obviously long gone. They both liked men that were not ...

...a natural comedy talent. In Romy and Michelle, her role is rather similar to Phoebe in 'Friends' only a little more bimbo-ish with a keen eye for fashion.
The story is quite basic but a little more unpredictable than most, with a couple of twists and turns here and there.
