Please excuse some of my older reviews, they have little substance to them. In fact, they are quite pathetic. But I can't seem to delete them. Ah well.

Having awaited the release of this film for over a year, I must admit I was a little disappointed with the way it was executed. However, that is purely because I am a kung fu fan and therefore judged the film more on the quality of the fights than the storyline.
Storyline
The story follows ex-cop Han Sing (Jet Li), a martial arts expert who falls in love with a Trish O'day (Aaliyah), a woman from a rival racial group. The couple proceed to attempt to discover the cause of the feud between the two groups, uncovering perhaps more than they expected.
The plot contains obvious similarities to the famous Shakespearean work, although fails to deliver the same impact. However, it still remains entertaining, and one does not need to be a fan of Shakespeare to enjoy it.
Martial Arts
Jet Li is undoubtedly one of the best martial artists ever to emerge from Hong Kong. Which is why I was shocked to see so many special effects used in the fight scenes.
Fair enough, special effects have become an expected quality of modern day cinematography, but when I watch a Kung Fu film, especially with a legend such as Jet Li, I expect at least a few minutes worth of raw kung fu. However, this film focuses more on moves which defy the laws of physics and matrix style action. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Matrix too, but that at least gave an excuse for the characters being able to defy gravity.
Performances
Out of all the big martial arts names to have emerged from Hong Kong, only two, in my opinion, have had any real acting talent. The first is, of course, Bruce Lee, the second being Jet Li. The overall performances of the whole cast are above average, But Jet Li definitely stands above the rest. Aaliyah is also well cast in her debut role.
Overall
If you are a fan of kung fu films, you may want to rent this out and have a look, but beware, it does not compare to such Li classics as The Shaolin Temple or Hitman. However, if you are looking for an entertaining, light-hearted action film, look no further. Good for what it is, but not what it tries to be.

If you like Martial Arts then you are sure to absolutely love Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, it is a beautiful film. Watch it if you haven't already (but I am sure that you have).

Excellent opinion. I have pretty much the same opinions as you about the film. Considering it's high profile cast, I really expected more, but there you go. Thanks ~ Dru

Advantages: good story/acting, excellent soundtrack, bursting with special features Disadvantages: *slight* predictability though not too much to put you off the movie itself. Game on PC enhancement not worth playing.
