Advantages: Truly original, Claire Danes and very cool. Disadvantages: Leonardo DiCaprio
...I originally saw this film at the cinema a few years ago and was gobsmacked by its brilliance. Having finally got round to seeing it again a few years later on DVD I was pleased to find that it really is a good as I remember.
I do not feel that I really need to explain the plot, after all this story has been done a million times before. What is special about this version is the shear originality. At times you feel that some scenes might go too far and just become silly but the director does a superb job at knowing when to stop.
I am not a Leonardo DiCaprio fan but I seem to like most films that he stars in. By far the better star of this film is the underused (in other movies) Claire Danes. She simply shines and is worth watching the film for alone. There is also an excellent supporting performance by Pete Postlethwaite.

Advantages: They didn't change the original language Disadvantages: Complicated to keep up with
...Romeo and Julliette is a classic. There are so many programmes based on the ideas portrayed in this film. The idea of people being so in love but still not being able to be with their lover. This film is extremely upsetting and will probably make you feel very melocolic for hours, but it is worth it as it is excellent. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes play the characters beautifully and the story has been converted into a modern day scenario, which definitely helps the story become clearer. Instead of words, for example, they use guns, although they do not alter Shakespear's language. There are slight adjustments but that is only to be expected....

DVD Description
This ambitious undertaking, adapting William Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed lovers and setting the story in a glossy music-video style in 1990s Florida. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes play the famous lovers kept apart by rival industrialist families. Bookended by newscastsers reciting Shakespeare's prose as their copy, this clever glam updating of ROMEO AND JULIET is one of the most unusual adaptations of the Bard's work in the history of cinema. The stylish and colourful sets earned the film an Oscar nomination for art direction. John Leguizamo gives a memorable performance as a devilish Tybalt.

Advantages: UM.... Disadvantages: YOU HAVE TO LSITEN IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE BASIC ROMEO AND JULIET STORY
...Romeo Montague (Leonardo DiCaprio), is staring at a fish tank, he glances through the tank to see Juliet Capulet (Claire Danes), their eyes meet and they instantly fall for each other.
It’s a modern day Romeo and Juliet where they have kept Shakespeare’s language of love, in some cases it’s a little difficult to follow.
Through the whole movie, feuding families, the Capulet’s and the Montagues are attacking each other and have formed a modern day type of a gang armed with guns.
For both families, there is no way that the two lovebirds are allowed to see each other because of the animosity between the two families. So, they marry in secret and of course.. are found out.
It ends with the traditional story line of Romeo dying accompanied by Juliet’s tears of sadness and shoots herself....
