It is quite strange how we came to watch this film as we watched a music video on a TV show quite some time ago and I was socked to see Danny DeVito and Michael Douglas singing and dancing along in it only to be told by hubby that this is the film which it was from. Since then I have been looking out fir the film as hubby was shocked that I had never see it. To my surprise it was on one of the older movie channel ion sky recently so we recorded it and finally got around to watching it.

As I have said this film was on the TV so it is a FILM ONLY review.

Joan Wilder is a romance novelist and she wishes that she could have some excitement n her life just like some of the characters which she writes about. Thing take a turn for her when she gets a phone call from her sister who is living in Colombia and has been kidnapped as her now dead husband found an old treasure map and the kidnappers are after it. Joan soon discovers that she was posted the map by her brother in law before he dies and now has to take the map over to the kidnappers in Columbia to free her sister.

Upon arriving in Columbia Joan has to try and find the correct place to deliver the map but as she is also being chased by a corrupt Columbian cop she goes off in the wrong direction but luckily for her she meets Jack Colton who after some bartering agrees to help her deliver the map for $350.

Jack and Joan set off on their way to deliver the map but soon find this is going to be harder than thought as they are now being chased not only by the corrupt cop but also a guy called Ralph who is working for the kidnappers. They face many obstacles but will the pair be able to deliver the map and free Joan’s sister or will they try another tactic to help Jack fulfil his dream of owning a yacht?

I did not have high expectations for this film as it is quite old now but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by it. I thought that Kathleen Turner who played the role of Joan was in fact very good and she came across as such a naive person at the beginning of the film, and it was nice to watch her grow and develop throughout the film. She worked well with Michael Douglas who took the role of Jack and I thought that they had a great on screen chemistry and they worked off each other very well and did in fact add some humour to the film.

Danny DeVito for me was great and I liked how he would always get into trouble for trying his best and he did at times make me laugh as he was just so daft despite not trying to be. I really think this is one of the better film which I have seen him in. There were a lot of supporting actors and actresses in the film and I think they all did good jobs and managed to bring a bit of depth to the storyline which was much needed.

The film was set in Columbia and we did have some wonderful shots out over the country and forests and I think this was a nice addition to the film. The music was not too bad for the film if a little dated now but it was appropriate for the places which it was used it. My favourite track from the film was ‘When the going gets Tough’ and this is the song which first bought the film to my attention.

The film was made in 1984 and this is very apparent from the costumes which the characters were wearing and also the scenery and even the car which were being driven. I think this did make the film seem a little dated at times and I don’t think that it would be able to stand out in the current times.

The running time of this film is 106 minutes and I did find that this was quite long enough. If it would have been any longer then I think I would have lost interest in it. The certificate which was given at the start of this film was a 12 but I think that children around the 10 years and over would enjoy this film. As we did not buy this film I am not sure what sort of price you would expect to pay for it but on places like Amazon or EBay then I am sure it would only be a few pounds.

Overall I am going to recommend this film as it is quite entertaining and has some good acting. The only disappointment for me was that the ending was very predictable and now it looks a bit dated.
