Director: John G. Avildsen Producers: Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler Writer: Sylvester Stallone Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers, Burgess Meredith and Tony Burton. Music by Bill Conti
Released in November 1976 this 2 hours movie follows the rise of an amateur boxer who makes it into the big time, grabbing the hearts of people as he does it.
**BRIEF PLOT**
Rocky Balboa, (played by Sylvester Stallone), nicknamed the 'Italian Stallion', is an amateur boxer from Philadelphia ,working as a debt collector for a loan shark, is struggling to make ends meet.
Meanwhile, on the richer side of the boxing fraternity, the manager of Apollo Creed, (played by Carl weathers), the then fictional Heavyweight champion, likes the nickname of Rocky and decides to match him with the champ for a publicity grabbing boxing match…
Rocky asks local gym owner and 1920s ex-bantam weight boxer, Mikey Goldmill (played by Burgess Meredith), to train him for the fight. For extra training away from the gym Rocky heads off down to a meat packing plant where his friend Paulie Pennino's, (played by Burt Young) works, here is where he can practice his punching power on the slabs of raw meat hanging from the hooks.
During the training Rocky becomes very friendly with Paulie's sister, Adrian Pennino, (played by Talia Shire), a rather shy and naïve woman, the total opposite of Paulie, who works in a pet store.
With Creed misjudging the underdog he doesn't take the training for the fight too seriously and begins to regret this when he steps into the ring for the fight…..

**IN CONCLUSION**
A great movie if you like to watch how a man can come from nothng to gain the respect and admiration of a nation. The storyline is well written and the acting is brilliant by all.
Stallone takes the part so seriously that you begin to believe that he is the boxer he portrays… his scruffy looking clothing and cheap method of training giving the idea that anyone can get themselves into shape.
The love story between Rocky and Adrian is delicately written and very well acted by the duo. (At the time of the movies release the whole nation would shout out her name at every opportunity due to some scenes toward the end of the movie).
Inside the ring the blood does flow as the pair battle it out for 15 rounds, (as it was at the time), Rocky standing his ground as the onslaught of power comes at him from the powerful fist of Creed. In return, Creed needing to protect his head as Rocky retaliates with some thunderous combinations…. The short but well choreographed fight in the ring simply makes this one a great movie all round
Although this one may not be to every ones taste, especially as there are no C.G.I.s or dodgy special effects, it is still a great movie to watch because of it's almost realistic story line and very unpredictable outcome…..
*Would I recommend this…? I am probably going to be very biased here but I would have to say yes to this as I like the entire concept of 'the little man makes it big' scenario and this movie tells it very well indeed without too much over the top special effects.
As I said earlier, this is not to every ones taste, mainly due to it being about boxing, but there is more to this movie than fighting. It is also about love, emotions and the real battle of minds….

Advantages: A true classic, well worthy of its three Oscars Disadvantages: Some of the fight scenes are very violent (if you dislike that sort of thing!)
