DVD Description
Director John G. Avildsen's ROCKY is the stand-up-and-cheer saga of Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), an underdog boxer who gets his million-to-one shot at love, self-respect, and the world heavyweight title. Rocky is a down-on-his-luck Philadelphia southpaw who works at a meat-packing factory while fighting at a local club. He's given the chance of a lifetime when the world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), chooses him as an unlikely opponent in his championship bicentennial fight. What was originally planned as a publicity stunt becomes a chance for Rocky to prove himself as a prizefighter while training with his cantankerous manager, Mickey (Burgess Meredith), to rise to the challenge. Thrilling scenes of Rocky's arduous training, including his unforgettable run up the Philadelphia Art Museum steps, are interspersed with a sweet and touching love story between the fighter and his best friend's shy sister, Adrian (Talia Shire). With the love of Adrian on his side, Rocky struggles to overcome the odds, fighting with all his heart in the glorious and brutal finale. Shot with gritty realism on the mean streets of Philadelphia, ROCKY introduced a new American cinematic hero, spurred on by rollicking action sequences and a rousing soundtrack. A triumph for star and screenwriter Stallone, who himself came from nowhere to reach the top, ROCKY is crowd-pleasing entertainment at its finest.
Advantages: A better storyline than expected Disadvantages: Quite possibly the last ever Rocky film
...to have been included in a "Rocky" film. So then it should come as no surprise that I thoroughly recommend "Rocky Balboa" to all, although I would highly recommend that anyone who cannot remember the original "Rocky" film to revisit it before watching this so that you can appreciate the beautifully crafted first half.

Audio Commentary (Sylvester Stallone) - This really surprised me as I expected listening to Stallone for an hour and half try to give an informative, coherent commentary a bit of a chore. In fact this commentary turns out to be one of the most enjoyable I have listened to. Whilst for the most Stallone comes across with not only a real passion for the film, but also for the character which has become a huge part of his life. Interspersed with the occasional...

Advantages: A great film, fantastic ending to the films, good special features Disadvantages: Possibly one too many.
...the result.
**Special Features**
This DVD is packed with special features. The highlight for me is the alternative ending and making of Rocky. The alternative ending shows Rocky winning the fight but exiting in the same way. The making of Rocky talks to the whole cast and shows how it was produced and directed. The deleted scenes are quite poor and I am glad they were removed. Another great is the Final fight training where we see how they practiced for the fights. We see that unlike the previous films, they actually hit each other and use proper sounds. There are also bloopers and an audio commentary by Stallone. Altogether the special features add a lot more to the film experience .Very good
**Reception**
The film received mostly positive reviews, some critised Stallone for creating another Rocky for moneys sake. This has some truth...

--------------------
Ok that's my review of the five Rocky films and as you can see the Rocky V in my opinion was one Rocky too many for me. However, if you think that is it, the Rocky Horror is over then I am afraid I am the bearer of bad tidings. Rocky Balboa (Rocky VI) is to be released on DVD in 2007 and yes Rocky is coming out of retirement again. This match will see him fight a young fighter in what I can only imagine to be a disaster if nothing else. We may have a bit of comedy in this one though as he throws a left-hander with his pension book and watch out for the Right with the walking stick. The opponent wants to watch...
