Director: John G. Avildsen Producers: Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler Writer: Sylvester Stallone Starring:Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Sage Stallone, Burgess Meredith, Tommy Morrison and Tony Burton
Released in late 1990, (14 years after starting the Rocky format), this 5th in line sees Rocky finally retire from boxing due to some severe hammerings from previous fights…
**BRIEF PLOT**
With Rocky, (played by Sylvester Stallone) becoming Bankrupt, due to some very unfortunate dealings from his accountant, he and his wife Adrian, (played by Talia Shire) and there son, Robert, (played by Stallones real life son, Sage), are forced to move back to the slums they came from in Philadelphia.
A new boxing promoter on the scene, George Washington Duke, (played by Richard Gant) offers Rocky a chance to fight an up and coming new star called Union Cane, (played by Michael
Williams), but due to bad health, after many severe beatings during his career, Rocky finally retires and gives up the world title…only his ego has other ideas…..
When Rocky visits his old stomping ground, the gymnasium where he trained and the streets he ran around, he spots a future for himself in the form of a young fighter named Tommy 'machine' Gun, (played by real life boxer Tommy Morrison), seeing himself in the boy, soon training Tommy enough to show him as a contender to take the heavy weight belt from Union Cane. But with the intervention of Duke, the Don King wanna be, it is not long before Tommy begins to mistrust Rocky and turns to the promoter for a chance to fight Union Cane…..
With Tommy now believing that he has to fight the aging Rocky to further his reputation it is not long before the two come face to face to resolve the issue…in the way only boxers do…..but this time outside of the ring……
**SOUNDTRACK**
1- That's what I said by M.C. Hammer 2- All you gotta do is sing by Joey B. Ellis 3- No Competition by MC Tab 4- Go for it by Joey B. Ellis and Tynetta Hare 5- Take you back by The 7A3 6- Measure of a man by Elton John 7- Can't stop the fire by Bill Conti 8- I wanna rock by Rob Base 9- Thought you were the one for me by Joey B. Ellis 10- Keep it up by Snap 11- Feel my power by M.C. Hammer.
**IN CONCLUSION**
Although it has the right ingredients, the action, the emotions and the fighting, it just doesn't have the same quality. With Stallone aging to the point where it would look silly fighting a man half his age and then winning, making the movie totally unrealistic, the storyline therefore had to create a more realistic scenario whilst still remembering that Rocky would remain the hero… whatever the outcome…and in Rocky 5 they sort of did this, realising that the movie would be too comical if they put Rocky back into the ring…
Stallone does another fine job playing the very, very punch drunk boxer whose ego is more powerful than his common sense, his mind constantly flashing back to his past, training with Mickey, his fights with Apollo and Clubber Lang and the severe beating he took against the big Russian, Ivan Drago…
The main characters in the Rocky sequels have remained constant and grew up well, Adrian starting as a shy young lady who is now beaming with confidence and Paulie remaining as the miserable, moaning brother who thinks the world owes him a favour.
In fact, if you have watched all the Rocky movies from the very first one you will have seen how they have matured and entertained throughout their reign.
With Rocky previously beating the massive 7 foot Russian, Ivan Drago, the fight against Tommy seems a cert… until you realise that the battle in the ring with Ivan really messed up Rockys head…
There is a slight difference with this movie than the previous 4 as there is no real training montage but much more fighting sequences, with some of them being the best of the lot.
*Would I recommend this….?
Yes I would, but not really for the story line, but so your collection would be almost complete.
Don't get me wrong… I enjoyed this movie, although not as good as say Rocky IV, but still, an enjoyable one in all.
The fight at the end is again well choreographed and done with some realism that you may sometimes think that it IS real….(but it's not).
In fact.. With this one being ever so slightly different than the others, but also being a very similar format it is a must for all Rocky fans.. Just to see how there hero is living after his fight against the giant of all opponents.
Go on…add it to your collection… you can pick up a copy from www.amazon.co.uk for around £7.…

Advantages: fairly good acting, finished off the story, great soundtrack Disadvantages: weaker than the previous ones, lack of fighting with Rocky, Pauley was annoying
