It's been said before but I'll say it again anyway, this was Disney's attempt to cash in on the Indiana Jones kick and it doesn't work. Well, it doesn't work WELL. There is a lot going for this film but sadly not enough to make a good film.
The story has some merit and with a better cast would have come to life far more effectively. Campbell is weak in the lead and is overshadowed by just about everyone else. Arkin is ok, but it is Dalton that steals acting honours in his all too brief appearances (and it's great to see him playing the bad guy after doing a good job with Bond).
The production is excellent and looks spot on. Likewise the effects are good and look polished. Best part of the film is undoubtedly the soundtrack though and James Horner's score does lift things a lot - but not enough.
We have here a good attempt at a story but it never seems really grand enough and does suffer from having weak characters.
Maybe not as bad as a lot of people would have you think and if you're a fan of the 30's serial King of The Rocket Men then you might get something out of it. Watchable if it's on and it's raining outside but don't make any special effort to see it
