It's been said before but I'll say it again anyway, this was Disney's attempt to cash in on the Indiana Jones kick and it doesn't work. Well, it doesn't work WELL. There is a lot going for this film but sadly not enough to make a good film.

The story centres on a pre-World War II stunt pilot (Bill Campbell) who accidentally comes into possession of a rocket-propelled backpack much coveted by the Nazis. With the aid of his mechanic pal (Alan Arkin), he gets it up and running, then uses it to foil a plot by a gang of vicious Nazi spies (is there any other kind?) led by Timothy Dalton. Jennifer Connelly is on hand as the love interest but the real fun here is when the Rocketeer takes off. There's also a nifty battle atop an airborne blimp.--Marshall Fine

The story has some merit and with a better cast would have come to life far more effectively. Campbell is weak in the lead and is overshadowed by just about everyone else. Arkin is ok, but it is ... ...appearances (and it's great to see him playing the bad guy after doing a good job with Bond).
The production is excellent and looks spot on. Likewise the effects are good and look polished. Best part of the film is undoubtedly the soundtrack though and James Horner's score does lift things a lot - but not enough.

The story has some merit and with a better cast would have come to life far more effectively. Campbell is weak in the lead and is overshadowed by just about everyone else. Arkin is ok, but it is Dalton that steals acting honours in his all too brief appearances (and it's great to see him playing the bad guy after doing a good job with Bond).

We have here a good attempt at a story but it never seems really grand enough and does suffer from having weak characters.
Maybe not as bad as a lot of people would have you think and if you're a fan of the 30's serial King of The Rocket Men then you might get something out of it. Watchable if it's on and it's raining outside but don't make any special effort to see it
Advantages: it finishes Disadvantages: You name it, it's got it
This is a corny Disney movie set in the 1920's about a man who finds a rocket pack and becomes a superhero. Never mind the fact that the pack should incinerate his back it has lots of flaws that stops you from watching the film and just sitting there picking falt with everything. It is really for young children, but at the time it came out I was 12 and suppose just about nearly fit into that category and I hated it. It is based on an old comic strip ...

Advantages: Good dialogue, good acting, interesting story Disadvantages: Is a bit of a slow moving story
Seeing how I think I did ok reviewing another of Wes Andersons movies I figured I might as well have a go at reviewing the others I've seen as well, so I figured I'd start with Bottle Rocket, as thats the first film that Wes directed and its also the first film that Owen and Luke Wilson and Bob Musgrave starred in too, the start of good things to come!
This movie I believe was written while Owen (and Luke(?)) and Wes were at university together in Texas in the 1990s and is now seen as a cult comedy hit.
Bottle Rocket is all about three friends who team up to escape their boring lifes and pursuit a life of petty crime. This eventually leads to the local criminal 'head honcho' who's played by James Caan, spotting them and convincing them to carry out a large heist - but is it too much for them to handle and will they get away with it ...
Advantages: A witty, original and appealing slice of cinema Disadvantages: Some will find it pretentious
On the run from Johnny Law ... ain't no trip to Cleveland
?Bottle Rocket? is the story of three men all searching for something (whether they know it or not). Anthony (Luke Wilson) is a lost soul who has just checked himself out of a mental institution where he?s been recuperating from ?exhaustion?. Dignan (Owen Wilson) doesn?t realise it?s a voluntary facility and so Anthony, not wanting to ruin his friend?s elaborate escape plan, asks permission to climb down bed sheets from his first floor room (his doctor pulling them up for him after he?s gone). With Anthony safely out of the nut house the friends are now ready to embark on Dignan?s substantially more elaborate seventy-five year plan, consisting of practise raids, goals, targets and drawn with felt tips, that will lead inexorably to the boys becoming master criminals. They start ...
The Review - Bottle Rocket, Wes Andersons first film is surely not his best but is still a worthy addition to the few films he has made. The script, as with all of Andersons other films, is witty, clever and quirky. Bottle Rocket gives the viewer a sign of things to come from Andersons other work. Such as the visual gags: matching yellow jump suits (the matching swim suits in The Life Aquatic and the matching red track suits in Tenenbaums) and the oddball characters I have come to love from all of Andersons films. Bottle Rocket is definitely not in the same league as Wes Andersons other efforts but it still will entertain and has one of the funniest final crime scenes you are likely to see. A film that was a hint of things to come. ...
