spectacular three-dimensional world with an all-star award-winning cast. This hilarious fun adventure not only pushes the boundaries of animation but also introduces us to a world full of loveable characters who led by Rodney Copperbottom (Ewan McGregor) set out to prove that you can shine no matter what you are made of! Rodney Copperbottom voiced by Ewan McGregor is a small town robot who has a gift for inventing things and a hope of moving beyond his quaint surroundings. He works side by side in a restaurant with his dad who is a dishwasher - literally a dishwasher. You open his chest and load in the dishes. Rodney has dreams of something greater. Armed with his unique talent for inventing Rodney embarks on a journey to Robot City to meet his idol the majestic inventor Bigweld voiced by Mel Brooks. An iconic figure in all of Robot City Bigweld has spent a lifetime creating things to make the lives of robots better. Once in Robot City Rodney finds that things are not quite as he expected and his quest may be a lot harder than he imagined. As he tries to navigate his way around this new city Rodney befriends the Rusties a ragtag group of street-smart bots who know the ropes. One of the Rusties Fender (voiced by Robin Williams) immediately becomes Rodney's best friend and even lets his spunky kid sister Piper Pinwheeler (voiced by Amanda Bynes) tag along. They take him in and for now at least Rodney has a home in Robot City. Rodney also meets Cappy (voiced by Halle Berry) an executive at Bigweld Industries who takes an instant liking to Rodney and sees a lot of herself in him. Along their adventures Rodney and his new friends encounter unsavory characters who try to derail Rodney's plans to find Bigweld and save Robot City. The result is a timeless comedic tale that pushes the boundaries of animation while introducing characters rich with humor and soul and a heart-warming story proves that a robot can shine no matter what he is made of. In addition to Ewan McGregor Robin Williams Halle Berry Mel Brooks and Amanda Bynes ROBOTS boasts the following ensemble cast: Drew Carey Jim Broadbent Paul Giamatti Jay Leno Dianne Wiest Stanley Tucci Jamie Kennedy and many others.
Robots [DVD] [2005]
The delightful designs of William Joyce (writer/illustrator of such popular children's ... more
books asGeorge ShrinksandBently&Egg) makeRobotsa joy to behold. The round, bouncy, and ramshackle forms of hero Rodney Copperbottom and his computer-animated friends are part of an ornate and daffy Rube-Goldberg universe of elaborate contraptions and gleaming metallic surfaces. Rodney (voiced with a hint-of-Scottish lilt by Ewan McGregor) is a young inventor who sets off for Robot City to work for Big Weld (Mel Brooks), the supreme inventor of the mechanical world. But upon his arrival, Rodney discovers that Big Weld has disappeared, and the slick, shiny Ratchet (Greg Kinnear) is phasing out the spare parts that lumpen robots need to function and replacing them with "upgrades"--expensive and glistening new exoskeletons. Unfortunately, from this suitable beginning, the story degenerates into a series of action sequences that make very little sense, though some are kinetic and fun (though others are only there to serve the inevitableRobotsvideo game). Most kids will enjoy the sheer visual pleasure of the movie, but compared to the narrative richness of Pixar movies likeThe IncrediblesandToy Story, that pleasure is pretty short-lived. Also featuring the voices of Robin Williams, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Amanda Bynes, Jennifer Coolidge, and many, many more.--Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com
Plot: Rodney Copperbottom is a talented inventor who hopes to make his fortune by moving to Robot City and working among the nuts and bolts of the robotics industry. Rodney fantasises about building robots for his boyhood hero and master inventor Big Weld, but when he meets him, Rodney's dream threatens to turn rusty. Big Weld reveals that his company is now being run by the evil Phineas T. Ratchet, a merciless money-maker who wants to rid the world of the antiquated robots that clutter up the streets of Robot City. This leaves Rodney's aspirations needing a major oil change, and with little chance of finding work, he feels about as useful as a broken spare part. So he takes to the streets, where he finds some unlikely salvation in a group of robots lead by Fender. Fender urges Rodney to help save them from the scrap heap, while Ratchet and his company create threatening new policies on robot reconstruction.

Fender urges Rodney to help save them from the scrap heap, while Ratchet and his company create threatening new policies on robot reconstruction. The ensuing action leads to a breathtaking set of adventures in the futuristic city. A fun, dizzying delight, ROBOTS benefits from the many voices of Robin Williams, who is the perfect comic foil to Ewan McGregor's central character. The special effects are masterfully handled, and the rendering of Robot City is a true sight to behold. A film that should find a broad audience among adults and children alike, ROBOTS is fast-paced animated entertainment at its finest.
Advantages: Fun film with a strong voice cast and good animation Disadvantages: In the face of stronge competition, it doesn't quite match up
...When "Robots" was released in 2005 I headed off to see it in the cinema. I have to admit in the sea of animated films offered by the likes of Pixar and Dreamworks in the last five years I had practically forgotten seeing the film when I met my husband and he happened to have the dvd in his collection. In the time we've been together I've watched the film at least 3 times and it never fails to raise at least a little giggle.
THE PREMISE
This Twentieth Century Fox animated film was directed by Chris Wedge and Carlos Saldanha who have been involved in the fabulous Ice Age films. As suggested by the title, it is set in a world where everyone is a Robot, as are their pets. Rodney Copperbottom is the beloved only child of hardworking parents who are forced to provide him with a serious of hand-me-down-parts, including some teenage...

Released in 2004 this film was as impressive as you would expect from Will Smith.
Set in the year 2035 in Chicago with humanoid robots walking the streets as servants to humans. We are quickly introduced to detective Del Spooner, (played by Will Smith) and soon realise that he has a total distrust for the robots, (later in the movie we find out the reason for the mistrust).
The film essentially starts with the death of a top scientist, presumably suicide, although Del thinks otherwise.
As del investigates the death he soon realises that there is more to the situation than first thought. The special effects used in...

...Many people will have read the book ?I Robot?, written by Isaac Asimov. In 2004, Alex Proyas directed a film based on this book.
This science fiction story is set in 2035, where robots have become common place in homes, being used for menial tasks. When a scientist at U.S. Robotics, Dr Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), falls to his death, the investigating detective, Del Spooner (Will Smith), suspects that one of the robots, Sonny (Alan Tudyk), may be to blame. However the robots live by three laws which prevent them from harming humans, so if Sonny was to blame then this could mean a serious flaw in the many robots in people?s homes. Spooner is a techno-phobe and has a deep dislike for the robots, which causes him to probe the case deeper despite objections.
This is a visually stunning story with an interesting story, but I felt...
