WARNING - SPOILER AHEAD
Murphy, a cop and new to Detroit arrives at his new posting just as a police officer Frank Frederickson shot on duty dies. He is the latest in a long line of murdered cops, in a gang dominated Detroit of the future. The situation has gotten so bad that a strike is being organised by the cops due to the escalating violence towards them. Murphy meets his partner Lewis and they are quickly involved in a chase with a notorious gang led by the evil Clarence Boddicker. The gang are tracked won to an abandoned steel mill and just as Murphy has the upper hand he is overpowered - in a very violent and disturbing scene Murphy is murdered by the gang and as the gang flee Lewis makes the terrible discovery. Murphy is rushed to hospital and undergoes an experimental new procedure whereby which he will be turned into a part man part machine law enforcer. Another robot cop devised by someone else from the robot company is not developed due to it killing a young exec at a presentation for the robot so "Robocop" as Murphy comes to be known is given the go ahead and has a high profile launch. He immediately goes about stopping societies ills, including armed robberies, rapes and hostage situations - the press love him and Robocop seems to be working well. However, the Murphy part of Robocop begins to remember his wife and son and keeps having flashbaacks of them and even visiting his former home. Robocop's creator Bob Morton is killed by Clarence Boddicker and through this Robocop discovers a link between Clarence's gang and Dick Jones, the creator of the corrupt, unused cop robot Ed 209. Due to directives instilled in his programming, Robocop can do little against Dick Jones and retreats into hiding with Lewis at the steel mill after a shootout aimed at Robocop. Here Robocop eliminates the gang leaving Clarence til last. Robocop then returns to the robot company, OCP and destroys Ed 209 - once in the boardroom Robocop plays footage of Dick Jones confessing to his crimes. Dick takes his boss hostage but Robocop's directives still ensure that he can't kill Dick Jones. Realising this the boss fires Dick Jones allowing Robocop to shoot Jones ending him out of the 90th floor window of the building. Asked his name at the end of the movie by the boss, he replies "Murphy"
CRITIQUE : Robocop is a rather misjudged film due to it's graphic violence and lots of swearing. However, to dismiss the film as pointless as others have here is completely missing the point. Yes the film is violent, many times shockingly so but the film also has many elements which are ingenious, touching and emotional. Murphy's partner Lewis shows remarkable devotion to her murdered friend and helps him to the very end, not only helping destroy his killers but in realising his true identity. The scenes of Murphy trying to remember where he came from are very sad {"I can feel them....but I can't remember them"} so the final shootout with the gang is very satisfying and in my mind quite deserved. The film also features a number of mock news reports and TV adverts which are very funny and well done and the film carries a rather satirical, ironic tone throughout. What I'm trying to say is don't see this as some no-brainer Arnie movie {not that they are a bad thing} - the film goes much deeper than that and can be funny, shocking and touching all in an hour and a half. The movie is a classic and if you're a fan of the old EC comics then this is like one of those brought to life with shocking realism. A great movie.
