Most of us associate Robocop with Peter Wellers automaton, guns and gore, and you wouldn't be far wrong, but Robocop actually carries a strong and quite amusing satire theme.
Robocop isn't about guns, high deathcounts or action. Well, yes it is, but these only serve to back up the satirical theme that forms the basis of Robocop. We see such little gems as a newsreader telling us that it is good enws that murders are down this month, as he smiles udner his makeup and mile wide smile. When the huge Omni Consumer Products corporation agress to help the crimelords destroy Robocop. When the crimelord asks if he can get milatary weapons, teh OCP man replies that 'We practically ARE the milatary', a tip of teh hat to teh massive and violent crimerates downtown Detroit suffers. We see teh day to day operations of Robocops precint as a day by day war, not a fight against crime.
The effects are excellent. Robocop is a master of FX technology. Not only does the Robosuit look great, but Peter Weller mastered the art of steady, methodical movement to a tee. Ever see those robotic adncers on San Fransisco Bay? well, he IS a robotic dancer of the highest degree. The action scenes are excellent, and as in all good guy- bad guy films, the good guy is beaten up and wrecked (remember Johnny 5 in Short Circuit 2?) and is repaired and then dispatches teh bad guys like Johnny 5 never did.
Kurtwood Smith is excellent as Clarence Boddicker, with the right mix of sadism, corruption and deceit. Anne Lewis' performance as Officer Nancy Allen, the ony female with any major role, is well done, her showing enough backbone to convince us that her death is an disagreeable plot turn. Ronny Cox and the ever- slimy Miguel Ferrer are just right as the corrupt corporate leaders, while Dan O'Herlihy is great as the OCP CEO kept in the dark about OCPs handling of the city.
The emotional effect of his mechanization on Wellers charachter Officer Alex Murphy is done well, with no overdone pain for Robocop. The flashbacks help as well, as we don't need Weller to act out the pain Robocop is feeling; we can see it.
In all, Robocop is a good film, with a good message. Watch it, but be careful for some gory scenes!
