RoboCop 2 brings about the return of Peter Weller as the bullet proof cop who keeps the streets clean. The story this time is set around a new addictve drug called "NUKE" that has plauged the streets of lawless Detroit.
RoboCop is unaware that his creators, OCP (Omni Consumer Products) want to take the city of Detroit "Private" and develop a new and improved RoboCop 2, a newer, bigger and far more powerful robot to replace the original.
This film is a sequel (dur...) and therefore needs to provide something original and revelotionary to become 'successful'. Sadly this film doesn't provide anything special that could rival the original. Yet again we are disappointed by a poor sequel. This film does the mistake of keeping too close to the original. There is more of the infmaous graphic violence from the first film and the now embarassing-to-watch stop motion technology. Take "Terminator 2" for example; it kept elements of the original but strayed away on its own to become one of the most succesful sequels of all time.
Like I said, the action in this film is frequent and bloody. The storyline is there but has no depth, only blood, which may be alright for some people but for others who want justification for the violence to begin with, it's not good. Other elements of the storyline ie chosing to have a druglord murdering psychopath to be placed into a robot body armed with Minigun, rocket launcher and an array of other deadly weapons. It is very unlikely but I suppose all the director wanted was to gave a reason for two cyborgs to battle one another in the climax.
Director Irvin Kershner tried to be Verhoeven but tripped up before reaching the finish line, his personal directing style was okay but he really should've flaunted his 'talent' elsewhere.
The performance from Peter Weller was again good, portraying a cyborg is probably easier said than done. The surporting cast wern't abismal but weren't too pleasing to watch by any means.
RoboCop 2 was a good attempt at making a good sequel but failed. It is a fairly enjoyable action sci.fi but isn't really worth the money for purchasing it. If you are keen to see then I recommend the RoboCop Triology on DVD where you get the original, far superior movie and the third is thrown in for the hell of it.
Enjoyable but nothing compared to the original RoboCop.
Great review once again, though I thought the sequel was terrible...so much I even liked RoboCop 3 slightly better. I just thought it was too mean-spirited and violent, also not near as entertaining as the original, which I regard as a masterpiece. Chris xxx
