Robin Of Sherwood - The Complete Series 1 [1984] [DVD]

Robin Of Sherwood - The Complete Series 1 [1984] [DVD]

The 1984 incarnation ofRobin of Sherwoodhad a crucial ingredient that the traditional tale ... more

previously lacked: magic. Creator Richard
Carpenter combined his knowledge of Medieval
England with a rich store of Arthurian-style
folklore to create a world where wizards and
witches rub shoulders with Norman knights and
Anglo-Saxon peasants. Michael Praed's enthusiastic
performance in the lead is matched by the sheer
energy of all involved. There may be pauses for a
spiritualtęte á tętewith forest demi-god Herne the
Hunter, but swordplay and archery are never far
behind. Wrapped in the forest's gorgeous greens
and pools of shadow the show maintained a
perfectly believable look, supported by what
should have been (but wasn't) glaringly
anachronistic music from Clannad. Best of all,
however, is the crackling dialogue that still
makes for compelling (and magical) viewing,
especially when it comes from guest actors such as
John Rhys-Davies as King Richard.On the
DVD:Contained here are all six episodes of Season
One. The two-part pilot is a terrific introduction
to the familiar characters such as Ray Winstone's
roughhouse Will Scarlet and unexpected new ones
such as Mark Ryan as Nasir, "the Boba Fett of
Sherwood". Camaraderie on-screen and off was
legendary. It's rare to see a cast having so much
fun.This exceptional three-disc box set features
one of the best extras packages any TV show has
been given. The original 4:3 picture is enhanced
for 16:9, but the new Dolby Surround track is the
real delight (the show was broadcast in mono).
Quickie fare includes key cast biographies,
Clannad's promo video, 175 photos and eight
minutes of genuinely hilarious outtakes. The real
meat comes from the misty-eyed yet fact-filled
commentaries from creator Richard Carpenter and
director Ian Sharp on four of the episodes.
They're only just eclipsed by a brand-new
hour-long documentary interviewing everyone
involved. Finally, the 1983 Electric Theatre Show
25-minute documentary on the making of the show
explores the character's origins and previous
screen incarnations. The third disc includes
everything shot for that documentary, adding up to
several hours of raw footage.--Paul Tonks

Robin of sherwood

Advantages: beautifully shot amazing sound track
Disadvantages: none

This tv series tryed to tell what many thought of as the original Robin hood story before hollywood got hold of it.Micheal Praed stars as a belivable robin whos up against guy of gisborn and the evil sheriff of nottingham trying to protect his friends and there family from the soilders, this series was beautifully shot and has the most amazing soundtreck to acompany it.The actual episodes are strongly based around the pagan belifs of the time which make it much more belivable and it far outways the recent robin hood series on many levels. The cast where amazing regulars such as ray winstone helped make the series famous while in nearly every episode you will spot a very young familar face in one of there first roles.Although its getting on now this is probably the best attempt at robin hood there has been its realistic beautifully shot ...

Creature Comforts Series 2 Part 1

Advantages: Very Clever Animation
Disadvantages: Few Real Laughs

I think Blackadder and only fools and horses are hilarious, I even enjoy Wallace & Gromit, but this just doesn't cut the mustard as far as I am concerned. The disc itself is presented in four sections. You get to play the episodes which you can either do separately or one by one, bonus materials, behind the scenes or play by character. Play the Episodes: We get six separate sections to view, they are: 1. Beast in Show: A rabbit tells us about his quest for breeding perfection, a Shetland pony who is after lots of girlfriends, a pig talking about losers, and a bull that is elated when slapped on the back to indicate he has won are amongst a few of the interviews. 2. The Brood: Includes a Seagull telling us about how he feels when his young leave the nest, also a load of Amoeba's talk about arguing with mum and dad. These are ...

Review of Creature Comforts - Series 2 - Part 1 (DVD)

From Bond's Son to Herne's Son

Advantages: Great mix of adventure, romance, comedy and magic
Disadvantages: Only the first part of the season

When I was a teenager there was a great deal of media speculation over who would be replacing Michael Praed as Robin of Sherwood. Then when it was announced that Jason Connery would be taking over the role, there was yet more speculation over whether he would be able to bring anything new to the character, or even fit in with the existing cast members. At the time, I wasn't really bothered who played Robin, only that the series continued, but now 20 years on and owning the DVD boxsets of all three series I feel I'm ready to say whether it worked or not. ~~~The Storyline~~~ Obviously the storyline had to continue from season 2, which posed a rather huge problem, in that Robin of Loxely had gone to meet his maker, how therefore would the writers manage to continue with the legend?? The answer was pure genius. You see as you ...
