The 1984 incarnation ofRobin of Sherwoodhad a crucial ingredient that the traditional tale ... more
previously lacked: magic. Creator Richard Carpenter combined his knowledge of Medieval England with a rich store of Arthurian-style folklore to create a world where wizards and witches rub shoulders with Norman knights and Anglo-Saxon peasants. Michael Praed's enthusiastic performance in the lead is matched by the sheer energy of all involved. There may be pauses for a spiritualtęte á tętewith forest demi-god Herne the Hunter, but swordplay and archery are never far behind. Wrapped in the forest's gorgeous greens and pools of shadow the show maintained a perfectly believable look, supported by what should have been (but wasn't) glaringly anachronistic music from Clannad. Best of all, however, is the crackling dialogue that still makes for compelling (and magical) viewing, especially when it comes from guest actors such as John Rhys-Davies as King Richard. On the DVD:Contained here are all six episodes of Season One. The two-part pilot is a terrific introduction to the familiar characters such as Ray Winstone's roughhouse Will Scarlet and unexpected new ones such as Mark Ryan as Nasir, "the Boba Fett of Sherwood". Camaraderie on-screen and off was legendary. It's rare to see a cast having so much fun. This exceptional three-disc box set features one of the best extras packages any TV show has been given. The original 4:3 picture is enhanced for 16:9, but the new Dolby Surround track is the real delight (the show was broadcast in mono). Quickie fare includes key cast biographies, Clannad's promo video, 175 photos and eight minutes of genuinely hilarious outtakes. The real meat comes from the misty-eyed yet fact-filled commentaries from creator Richard Carpenter and director Ian Sharp on four of the episodes. They're only just eclipsed by a brand-new hour-long documentary interviewing everyone involved. Finally, the 1983 Electric Theatre Show 25-minute documentary on the making of the show explores the character's origins and previous screen incarnations. The third disc includes everything shot for that documentary, adding up to several hours of raw footage.--Paul Tonks

This tv series tryed to tell what many thought of as the original Robin hood story before hollywood got hold of it.Micheal Praed stars as a belivable robin whos up against guy of gisborn and the evil sheriff of nottingham trying to protect his friends and there family from the soilders, this series was beautifully shot and has the most amazing soundtreck to acompany it.The actual episodes are strongly based around the pagan belifs of the time which make it much more belivable and it far outways the recent robin hood series on many levels. The cast where amazing regulars such as ray winstone helped make the series famous while in nearly every episode you will spot a very young familar face in one of there first roles.Although its getting on now this is probably the best attempt at robin hood there has been its realistic beautifully shot ...
Advantages: Very Clever Animation Disadvantages: Few Real Laughs
the best ones are developed into the animations.
On occasion these are funny, and by funny I mean laugh out loud funny. But for the most part they are merely slightly amusing anecdotes on various, mostly bland, subject matter and observations on life. More often than not it is the background characters that will do something that makes you smile by doing something funny, but ultimately the laughs just aren't there consistently enough for me.
There is no doubt that it is very clever, and the idea behind to whole thing is an original one but after the first few interviews you begin to wonder when the laughs will begin. For example there is a Welsh Dog, not sure of the breed but it is one of those dogs with folds of skin, well it just isn't funny at all, not in any way shape or form. Perhaps it's me. Perhaps my sense of humour is flawed, but ...
Advantages: Dramatic, Good Acting, Fantastic Soundtrack, Brilliant Plot! Disadvantages: Would have loved more Special Features :(
I am a Robin Hood addict. (Richard Armitage and Jonas Armstrong are just one of the reasons... If you get my drift)
What Is It?
This DVD contains the first five episodes of the BBC new series about the legendary outlaw, Robin Hood. This was first shown on the BBC, and later released as DVD's, however they can now be bought as a full box set, and no longer per every 5 episodes. There are three volumes in this series, all of which I own. This is another take on the outlaw, and is seen to give him a new light and make him much more exciting and thrilling. This is PG rated and is suitable for children, as long as you don't mind them watching the odd sword fight.
Since 2006, a new series of Robin Hood was shown on the BBC and most recently series 3 is on our screens. I watched the first episode of series one and since then have ...
A new adaptation of the Robin Hood story which finds adventures, sorcery and mysticism for the hero Robin.
