previously lacked: magic. Creator Richard Carpenter combined his knowledge of Medieval England with a rich store of Arthurian-style folklore to create a world where wizards and witches rub shoulders with Norman knights and Anglo-Saxon peasants. Michael Praed's enthusiastic performance in the lead is matched by the sheer energy of all involved. There may be pauses for a spiritualtęte á tętewith forest demi-god Herne the Hunter, but swordplay and archery are never far behind. Wrapped in the forest's gorgeous greens and pools of shadow the show maintained a perfectly believable look, supported by what should have been (but wasn't) glaringly anachronistic music from Clannad. Best of all, however, is the crackling dialogue that still makes for compelling (and magical) viewing, especially when it comes from guest actors such as John Rhys-Davies as King Richard. On the DVD:Contained here are all six episodes of Season One. The two-part pilot is a terrific introduction to the familiar characters such as Ray Winstone's roughhouse Will Scarlet and unexpected new ones such as Mark Ryan as Nasir, "the Boba Fett of Sherwood". Camaraderie on-screen and off was legendary. It's rare to see a cast having so much fun. This exceptional three-disc box set features one of the best extras packages any TV show has been given. The original 4:3 picture is enhanced for 16:9, but the new Dolby Surround track is the real delight (the show was broadcast in mono). Quickie fare includes key cast biographies, Clannad's promo video, 175 photos and eight minutes of genuinely hilarious outtakes. The real meat comes from the misty-eyed yet fact-filled commentaries from creator Richard Carpenter and director Ian Sharp on four of the episodes. They're only just eclipsed by a brand-new hour-long documentary interviewing everyone involved. Finally, the 1983 Electric Theatre Show 25-minute documentary on the making of the show explores the character's origins and previous screen incarnations. The third disc includes everything shot for that documentary, adding up to several hours of raw footage.--Paul Tonks

...This tv series tryed to tell what many thought of as the original Robin hood story before hollywood got hold of it.Micheal Praed stars as a belivable robin whos up against guy of gisborn and the evil sheriff of nottingham trying to protect his friends and there family from the soilders, this series was beautifully shot and has the most amazing soundtreck to acompany it.The actual episodes are strongly based around the pagan belifs of the time which make it much more belivable and it far outways the recent robin hood series on many levels. The cast where amazing regulars such as ray winstone helped make the series famous while in nearly every episode you will spot a very young familar face in one of there first roles.Although its getting on now this is probably the best attempt at robin hood there has been its realistic beautifully shot...

...bring to the role in the Hollywood version. Richard O'Brien, he of Crystal Maze fame, was also a semi-regular guest as a deranged mystic who was pitched against Robin's gang from time to time, and he's fairly worrying in real life so his role was just perfect.
The whole show had a mystical and shadowy quality as well as a believable and small-scale battle at its core. The sets were good and some of England's finest castle were employed, Bamburgh and Alnwick in particular to help in that respect. One of the criticisms that many people levelled at it at the time was the same one that was levelled at the Sharpe series that came a few years later and that was the small scale of the fights and battles. Whereas in the case of Sharpe, set as it was in a time of mass rank and file set piece conflict, suffers from this, in Robin of Sherwood's case...

Advantages: none Disadvantages: loads of scenes and music scores have been cut out
...this is the only fools and horses complete collection boxset but in my eyes it isnt because loads of scenes have been cut and musical scores changed or cut out and laughter tracks added onto episodes that didnt originally have a laughter track. so its not really the complete collection is it with all these things changed and added the episode a royal flush is the one that been edited the most loads of scenes have been cut and a laughter track added wich spoils the episode completely. i would strongly recommend anyone that want to see all the episodes in all their glory is to tape them off uk gold its better than this so called complete collection that the bbc have released im still waiting for the genuine complete collection....
