There are some stories or tales that are passed down by word of mouth and become legend. Robin Hood is one such story, now whether there really was a real Robin Hood is besides the point the morals of the story are solid. Good against Evil has and probably always will be the core of a really good adventure movie.
Although as I said the moral of the Robin hood story are pretty solid there is of course the fact that he was comitting crimes albeit for the good, so there may be a bit of a dilema there.
In this Hollywood version of the Robin Hood story the lead is played by Kevin Costner, who recently seems to have vanished of the face of the earth, perhaps he too has seen this movie so many times that he also has just about had enough of it. It seems like Easter comes around 3 times a year and that this is the in Easter movie.
Apart from the fact that I almost know the whole movie word for word due to my son thinking it is one of the best movies of all time, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves is still after all a very good family film.
Robin returns from abroad with a Moorish gentleman Azeem ( Morgan Freeman )in tow. He owes Robin a favour for Robin having saved him so he hangs about the rest of the film helping out until his big moment comes.
Robin arrives to an England in turmoil with the absence of King Richard. Richard's brother Prince John plans to take the throne in Richards absence. To do this he needs a lot of support from the english nobility and therefore needs lot of money. To obtain the monetary funds he requires he raises taxes and taxes just about everything. This as you might imagine cause a lot of ill feeling amongst the tax payers.
Robin decides that he has to do something so he starts robbing from rich passers by in Sherwood Forrest. The local noble and Sheriff of Nottingham ( Alan Rickman ) finds this more than an inconvenience and sets about capturing Robin.
The ensuing battle of wits between the two makes for very entertaining viewing. Rickman plays his part exceptionally well and provides some of the best lines in the film.
Just to complicate things a little there is also a woman invovled, the ever beautiful maid Marion ( Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio ). there is an instant attraction between her and Robin, but the Sheriff of Nottingham has other ideas.
There are many scrimishes between the two men throughout the film, leading to the climax which is very entertaining.
There are some good special effects in this very pleasurable movie, and it is generally well presented. The cinematography is reasonable and the casting is very good. For me the film is made most memorable by the superb performance from Alan Rickman who portrays the ever frustrated Sherriff excellently.
The music which accompanies this film has in itself made history being number one in the charts for no less than 16 weeks. I am of course reffering here to Brian Adams haunting melody " Everything I do I do it for you" The haunting bit was just a little bit of Don humour since I've heard this song more times than I've seen the movie and frankly good though the movie is I don't plan of watching it again for a very long time.
The film is directed well by Kevin Reynolds with the story and screenplay by Pen Densham.
Other cast members
