Cue, Bryan Adams intro of "Everything I do", and copious amounts of green foliage and any film lover will remember back to the days when Kevin Costner was actually a GOOD actor (god bless Waterworld!!).
Kevin Costner plays the lead role of Robin of Locksley, an escaped prisoner from a foreign land with fellow escaped prisoner Azeem (Morgan Freeman). They both travel back to England to find that the Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman) is running an autcratic rule, and also plans to marry Marion (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) whom Robin eventually falls in love with himself and will stop at nothing to get his girl.
Upon return to Sherwood Forest, Robin meets a gang of outlaws including Little John (Nick Brimble) and Will Scarlet (Christian Slater) among others (the latter of which turns out to be Robin's brother) and eventually joins and leads the outlaws in a contiouous mission of helping the poor and plundering all he can from the rich who travel from Sherwood forest.
However eventually the hideout in the forest is located by the Sheriff, who gives orders for it to be burned to the ground and Robin Hood slain. The result is tht many villagers are captured and taken to Nottingham Castle dungeon. This leads to the final assault on the Castle, to rescue the captors as well as Marion from the evil clutches of the Sheriff.
The direction of this film is competent and Kevin Reynolds does a good job in portraying a much-loved classic tale, and does so with violence that is never gory or displeasing and humour which is well-placed and helpful to the all-round feel of the story.
The choice of cast works well with notable performances from Rickman, Costner and Freeman to bring the tale together. Such fine and comic acting make this film the classic that it has been heralded by many.
The special effects are really nothing spectacular, but that doesn't take anything away from the film, the best you really get are the odd explosion, but for a film that is nearly 15 years old, then this is not a drawback that really needs to be focussed upon.
The film boasts a song from its soundtrack that holds the current record for the longest number of weeks at number 1 in the UK charts, yep its that Canadian again, Bryan Adams. Many of the tunes witnessed in the film, especially the lovey-dovey scenes are little remixes of that song. Other tunes further add to the current atmosphere in the film, but are instantly forgettable.
The major downfall for this film is the distinct lack of extras available on the DVD. There are none. Count them, zero. You have the option of starting the film, and selecting a chapter, but thats it. I believe the two-disc special edition has a lot of added features and is this is your kind of thing, then I seriously suggest you opt for that option because you certainly wont find them here!
As for the price, the film is old now, and so you should be able to pick it up cheap in a sale somewhere. Currently HMV are selling it for £14.99, but it can be bought for £4.99 new at Amazon, so its worth shopping around to find the best deal.
Overall, I would rate this film, I personally love it, and I like Costner as an actor, but if you are looking for a complete enetertainment package, then this particular release (ie not the two-disc special edition) may not provide all that you are looking for.
Thanks for reading
Milky :)
