Robin Hood The Prince Of Thieves - PG

The exceptional cast consists of: Kevin Costner (Robin of Loxley), Alan Rickman (Sheriff of Nottingham), Christian Slater (Robin Hoods brother), Morgan Freeman, Sean Connery (King Richard-only a brief appearance towards the end though), Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (Maid Marion).
I thoroughly enjoyed this film when I watched it first, and still love it when I watch it now. I must have seen the film at least 20 times now.

Review:
Robin Hood in the film is portrayed as a rich person, as his father owns a castle and is kind of the king of Loxley. He has rich clothing and an expensive medallion around his neck, which is worth, and awful lot for anyone who gets it.
The film starts with Robin Hood’s father writing a letter to his dear son ‘Robin Hood’. The sheriff of Nottingham then attacks him; the sheriff’s guards overwhelm him and kill him.
Then goes on to Robin in a dungeon; you gather that he has been captured fighting in the crusades. He succeeds in an escape attempt freeing him from the dungeon and two other people. One of the people being his old best friend, and is the person who is in love with Marion. The other is Morgan Freeman who persuades Robin to cut him free. When they get outside into the courtyard Robin’s friend gets shot by an archer on top of the castle wall. With his last words of life he gives Robin an engagement ring to give to maid Marion as he was in love with her. Costner and Freemen manage to hide in a small hut form the roaming guards, even finding a couple of juicy grapefruits to eat and satisfy their hunger.
It goes onto Robin coming home to see his father in Loxley crossing the sea in a sailing boat- a bit cheesy but believable. Entering the castle of his father he sees his own father hanging from the roof dead in a cage. Robin is upset and sees his fathers’ truest friend ‘Duncan’ calling Robin’s name obviously not dead. Robin angrily asks him why he didn’t fight off the guards for his father, but then seeing that the person he is shouting at has both of his eyes missing.
He buries his father in a grave outside slicing his hand with a knife and squeezing his hand to drip blood on his father’s grave, basically saying that he will get his father re-vengeance.
Robin sees a boy running from the sheriff’s dogs and their hounds as well. He clambers up a tree to get away from them. They are about to chop it down when robin comes along saying, “This tree is on my land, and therefore it belongs to me”. They try and fight him but un-succeeds, Robin even knocking the Sheriff of Nottingham’s cousin off his horse, and putting a blade to his throat. He lets him live sending him back to Nottingham giving him a message to the sheriff.
He then goes off to find maid Marion so he can give her the ring, and succeeds. With a little trouble though-entering the castle with no weapon and being attacked by maid Marion herself in full body armour, obviously not knowing that it was Robin who used to bully her as a child and burn her hair. He has a conversation outside with her, he gives her the ring and obviously she sobs. Freemen sees the Sheriffs guards riding towards them in the faint distance, Costner and Freemen ride off in the away form the guards- Robin taking Maid Marion’s horse.
They ride into Sherwood forest escaping from the guards with a couple of arrows in the backside of their horses. They manage to escape from the guards as the forest is meant to be haunted. As Alan Rickman’s cousin has once again failed to capture robin he puts a sword through him commenting on the good steal blade-obviously portraying that he is a very evil, horrible man.
Costner and freemen run into Robin’s brother, (Christian Slater) and the legend little john. Little John challenges Robin to a duel with sticks next to the waterfall. If Robin looses Little John takes his medallion, and if he wins he gets to carry on through Sherwood Forest. Robin starts of loosing getting a few bruises, but then comes back underneath little John as he comes up out of the water and hits him in the knackers. Luckily Little John can’t swim so Robin helps him to his feet for his medallion back.
He makes friends with Little John and his brother’s companions, but still his brother has intolerable cruelty towards him. You find out the reason later that it is because Slater thinks their father loved Robin more than him.
Robin and the crew attack a couple of squads from the sheriff and takes any gold they are carrying to give to the poor, this obviously gets the Sheriff angry.
The crew then build their own defending post in the forest made of wood.
Christian Slater attempts to throw a knife at Robin, but little John’s son (same child he saved when he was up the tree) shouts to robin, so robin turns round quickly and puts and arrow through Slater’s hand.
Robin then invites Maid Marion round to see their own home. For the girls you see the backside of Kevin Costner down near the waterfall, when she is trying to find him. The merry men have a party and Little John’s wife comes pregnant. Its a boy.

The sheriff’s guards find maid Marion and blind Duncan, Duncan manages to escape but Marion gets captured and taken back to Nottingham castle. You don’t see this but the guards follow Duncan, with his horse leading him back to the defend post. Duncan leads the guards and the entire Celtic army straight to them.
They have a cool battle with the merry men all with bows killing loads of celts. Also Costner wiping loads out with his brilliant aim. They manage to fight off the celts but then see the sheriff’s guards in a row with big bad weapons, with fire arrows and fireballs. They burn down their home taken prisoners, Robin falling off a wooden bridge into some hay-loosing his medallion after helping Little John’s wife out of danger. Robin’s brother Slater, and Little John’s son get taken prisoner. The sheriff thinks Robin is dead and so gives the medallion to Maid Marion. She runs through the castle crying.
Slater in the dungeon persuades the Sheriff to let him go back into Sherwood forest so he can give the merry men some news, and find out if Robin is really dead, as there are rumours that he might still be alive. The news is that the men and the boy will be hung tomorrow and the sheriff is going to marry Marion, of course against her will. Slater makes up with his brother in a strong feel-good scene. R is going to stick with them until they end-they plan to go and free the prisoners.
The day arrives; the scene starts with the merry men disguised as normal people, in the crowds who were waiting for the hangings.
The prisoners come out, with the drums beating and are taken to the hanging stands. Christian Slater is also taken out of the crowd and added to the hang members. They tie him down to a fuel barrel ready to kill at the same time as the others. Robin was going to stop the hanging by shooting the fuel barrel with a fire arrow, but now of course the plan couldn’t go through. The hanging starts, Robin fires an arrow through the rope which was hanging the child-he survives. Everyone Turns round seeing Robin amazed he was still alive. Another feel-good scene. Marion shouts ‘ROBIN’, and the sheriff says ‘Loxley’.
Morgan Freemen persuades the crowd that if they fight this fight for Robin Hood they shall get their freedom form the powering sheriff. The crowd help and everyone fights the guards. After a small fight Robin needs to get over the castle wall to save Marion before she is forcefully married to the sheriff.
A very cheesy bit when Costner and Freemen clear the castle wall and land on loads of hay from a large catapult, it could still happen though.
He manages to get to the top of the castle and swing in through the window with a large giant flag. They have a fight with swords, after a long decent fight the sheriff manages to break Robins sword, and is about to thrust it into Robin, Marion runs up, and Robin whips a dagger out of his boot and plunged it into the Sheriffs heart. An old wicked women comes charging at Robin with a sword, Morgan Freemen breaks open the door and throws his sword at the wicked women. Robin and Marion kiss. The final scene starts with the wedding of Robin and Marion, a quick appearance of Sean Connery and they kiss to bind them together forever.
A true feel-good, action/romance classic.
Thank you for reading.
