I have re-written my first attempt at a review as the feedback from people was that more information was needed on plot/characters (I didn't know how much to put in - so thank you for those that fed back to me!)
Anyway, attempt 2 . . . !!
This film is a good few years old now, but I remember loving it when it came out in the early 90's.
Despite some dodgy english accents from the american actors, it is a very good version of the classic Robin Hood tale.
Kevin Costner plays Robin of Sherwood. He returns home after fighting in the Crusades to find his homeland is not as he left it. The wicked Sheriff of Nottingham (a very hammy but funny Alan Rickman) has got the locals terrified and those that don't like what he is doing have taken refuge in the woods of Sherwood Forest.
Robin eventually gets these 'merry men' of the forest to trust him and take up arms against the nasty Sheriff, along the way falling in love with Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio who plays Maid Marion and who has grown up somewhat from how he remembers her as a child!!
The drunken friar, sulky Will Scarlett (Christian Slater) a corrupt priest and a mad witch are all vivid characters interspersed along the way making a very interesting plotline.
I particularly like Morgan Freeman's character, a prisoner from the Crusades who Robin Hood frees and who then repays the debt by becoming his loyal follower (with a dry wit in tow!)
The finale which sees Robin and the Merry Men storming the Sheriffs castle is very exciting and edge of the seat stuff, and it all ties up nicely with the goodies winning out, the guy getting the girl and the baddies getting their comeuppance in various ways!
Of course most people remember it for being the film which Bryan Adams did the theme song for (Everything I Do) which seemed to spend forever in the charts at number 1 when the film was out!!
Overall, a good action film with romance, comedy and excitement - I would definitely recommend viewing it!

Advantages: fantastic action scenes, Alan Rickman is outstanding as the Sheriff of Nottingham Disadvantages: the historical detail is a bit far-fetched
