SaddlesandYoung Frankenstein? Sadly, the answer is yes. Mel Brooks treads water shamelessly withRobin Hood: Men in Tightsand the few laughs to be had depend almost entirely on mocking Kevin Costner's earnest blockbusterRobin Hood: Prince of Thievesfrom two years earlier ("Unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent", boasts Cary Elwes' Robin). Not only is this far too easy a target for a skit, but the single-film parody concept is stretched way too thin over an entire movie (Brooks elected to repeat the trick with 1995'sDracula: Dead and Loving It). Elwes models his portrayal on Errol Flynn, but only infrequently gets to have fun with the legend: in the climactic sword fight, for example, the shadow play of Flynn and Basil Rathbone's sheriff is affectionately parodied, but such moments are few and far between. Brooks regular Dom DeLuise chips in with a Marlon Brando impersonation, but everyone else is simply taking off characters from the Costner movie: Patrick Stewart even gives us his best Sean Connery impression as a Scottish Richard I. Brooks himself does his stock Jewish act, this time as Rabbi Tuckman; Isaac Hayes has a small cameo in the Morgan Freeman part but seems to think Jerusalem is in Africa; while his on-screen son (David Chappelle) makes the mistake of reminding the audience of what they are missing: "A black sheriff? Why not, it worked inBlazing Saddles". Indeed it did.On the DVD: Precious few extras here, just a small behind the scenes feature and trailer. But the anamorphic picture looks good. --Mark Walker

Now the traditional story of Robin Hood tells us how whilst King Richard is away fighting the crusades evil Prince John starts controlling the country and making the lives of everyday people hell. Robin Hood thereby comes to the rescue of the ordinary person. He steals from the tax collectors, wins archery contests, defeats the sheriff and finally rescues the beautiful Maid Marian. Robin Hood Men In Tights however gives a whole new take on this age-old legend.
Here Mel Brooks cleverly parodies events from other adventure and romance films in order to wipe away the mystery of England's most famous tight-wearing legend; Robin of Loxley. Now Robin and his nylon clad crew go through many of the trials and tribulations associated with the legendary story including bringing down the evil prince John and his well-named sidekick the Sheriff of Rottingham. They also however have new problems to solve as Robin must not only win Maid Marians heart but also procure the key to it and her chastity belt! Welcome to Sherwood Forest the home of Robin Hood and his merry bunch of mayhem causing men.
Now I have loved this film for a long time and so can't really understand why it took me so long to purchase on DVD. Anyway I watched this film about a week ago with my dad and have to admit that the film had us both chuckling throughout. I'm not going to say however that this film will split your sides with its jokes but it will certainly make you laugh.
Robin Hood Men In Tights is scripted and shot in such a way as to not completely deter from the original idea of Robin Hood but simply to make fun of it and distort or slightly change parts of the story to make it more comical. This is often done by the use of some fantastic and intriguing characters such as Maid Marian's German maid and Robin's blind sidekick Blinkin who is more often than not the brunt of many a joke.
Quite cleverly the film also uses song to create laughter. This occurs from the opening sequence whereby a group of nylon wearing dancers introduce the main story through the use of song. This theme continues throughout with Robin singing to Maid Marian and of course the fantastic rendition of men in tights, which is sung by all of Robin's merry men.
The acting as you can imagine from such a spoof style film is reasonably cheesy although this style does suit the film and so cannot be complained about. Cary Elwes, who plays Robin, does so very well. He is charismatic and charming and so fits the character well. Furthermore he is reasonably good looking, which does make the tale of Maid Marian all the more believable. Dave Chappelle as Ahchoo is also brilliant and really compliments the character of Robin. Being black his character also gives Brooks the ability to introduce some of the ideas founded in Blazing Saddles and this gives the film another comic element.
All in all Robin Hood Men In Tights is a film I would definitely recommend. It has a PG rating and so is near enough suitable for the whole family. Some of the jokes are more adult but these should all go over the heads of young children. All that is left for me to say therefore is that if you haven't seen this fantastic parody film then now is the time to do so.
Advantages: Very Funny Disadvantages: Not in the same league as Blazing Saddles
Mel Brooks takes on Robin Hood in this movie, released around the same time as that other famous movie, with that other famous Robin Hood. Only difference is - this guy, unlike some other Robin Hoods, can speak with an english accent.
And so continues 'Robin Hood: Men in Tights'. Upon his return, Robin finds his home burned to the ground and his family murdered. The only man left is faithful retainer Blinkin (Mark Blankfield) who has been blinded. The man who has done this, Robin discovers is the evil Sheriff ...

Advantages: Funny, has Cary Ewles in it Disadvantages: Random at parts
Robin Hood: Men In Tights, is one of my favourite comedy movies. First because I love Robin Hood, and second because I love Cary Ewles. The story is about... Robin Hood, and everyone should sort of know that story. Except that it has a twist, it is a spoof movie. It is directed by Mel Brooks and stars Cary Ewles, as the famous Robin Hood.
Robin Hood as usual robs from the rich to give to the poor, so with the comedy spin off, Robin is doing just ... ...played by Amy Yasbeck. With the artful music of the merry men (they do a little song and dance).
Mel Brooks completely turns the story upside down adding comedic value to it. Such as adding a blind man as one of the merry men, and having his house pulled away like it was on wheels. Or one of my favourite scenes, which is when the Sheriff of "Rottingham" calls in the mafia to deal with his problems. The strange thing is that Don Giovanni (the mafia ...

...version of the story of Robin Hood. It is really funny as Robin teams up with his merry men and newcomers Achoo and Blinkin. This really is laugh a minute stuff, a hilarious movie.
My favourite scene has to be where the merry men all sing in the woods about the fact that they are men in tights. We are men, men in tights, manly men.
I would definitely recommend this film to people who like a comedy movie and just want to continue laughing throughout. ...

...is simple enough. Just think Robin Hood vs evil Sheriff (of Rottingham) and you wont go far wrong.
Where this film excels is that nearly every scene is genuinely funny - even the cheesy bits are great!
It is a musical of sorts, but the songs are interspersed with humour throughout - watch out for the merry men dancing the can-can...

Advantages: Good laugh. Disadvantages: Some bits are a bit too cheesy.
This has to be one of Mel Brooks very best. The whole film keeps you laughing all the way through, with genuine laughter and giggles, not quick and lame gags. The humour of the characters is great, and the actor who plays the Sheriff of Nottingham is a REAL bad guy, and plays the character well.
The great mid film song, "We're men! We're men in tights!" is great, and puts a big smile on your face everytime you hear it.
The lead female, Marian, ... ...also good.
Robin, played by an English cheesy actor (and mentions that he is the only English actor to do so), is a great laugh, and brings the film into great comic history. The plot is simple, but theirs a lot of fun on the way. Just let it take you. ...

DVD Description
A parody of the much-done medieval English tale of Robin Hood and his Merry Men, ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS also directly lampoons the politically correct ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES, which starred the hearthrob of the time, the very un-British Kevin Costner. English hearthrob Cary Elwes gets a turn in the role of the hero of Sherwood Forest who robs from the rich to give to the poor when he returns from the Crusades to find his beloved King Richard (Patrick Stewart in an amazing Sean Connery imitation) usurped by the evil Prince John (Richard Lewis) and his henchman, the Sheriff of Rottingham (Roger Rees). In typical Brooks fashion there is much satire, some gross jokes, a dash of screwball farce, and a Jewish spin put on gentile characters: Hence, Friar Tuck is transformed into Rabbi Tuckman (Mel Brooks), who is eager to perform circumcisions on the dim-witted Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Tracey Ullmann further livens up the ensemble as the witchlike cook Latrine. Those familiar with other Brooks films will also note moments parodying some of the director's own past spoofs, including HIGH ANXIETY and BLAZING SADDLES.
