For Josh life couldn't be better, he has just started College and has a long distance relationship with his childhood sweetheart Tiffany. That is until Josh can't get in contact with her and ends up sleeping with Beth and making a video of it. The next day he asks his roommate Rubin to post a video letter he'd made for Tiffany but he sends the wrong tape. Now Josh has just 4 days to get from New York to Austin, Texas in order to recover the tape before Tiffany see's it. This sets the scene for an amusing race against time across the States for Josh and three of his College mates.
Having been released the year after the first American Pie movie, there was quite a bit of expectation around Road Trip. It feel into the Teen High School/College comedy genre with ease and like the previous year's success with American Pie it ticked all the required criteria. To a certain extent it still meets them, 7 years later just like the original
American Pie. I can find myself still watching Road trip, whether it be on TV or on DVD and finding it just as funny as I did upon its original release.
The film was director Todd Phillips third release and has since been followed by the re-make of Starsky and Hutch and also School for Scoundrels. While the scenes are well put together, he seems to by and large just let the movie flow, creating a funny feel to the overall plot. Of course the scene's are set up well and with Phillips also claiming a writing credit for this movie as well its clear to see that his involvement on both sides of the creative process have actually benefitted the movie. In a similar way to the American Pie films you get a good sense of camaraderie between the entire cast and crew which shines through in the movie.
One of the real plus points about Road Trip is certainly the script. It is packed full of funny moments, many of which surround Tom Green and his unique mannerisms. The story is told in a nice flowing style and while there is a very good plot to the film it also mixes nicely with a very healthy splattering of Comedy. It may not be a totally original premise but it is one that works very effectively and fulfils exactly what you would want from this style of comedy. It combines some original material with jokes from all manner of other Teen comedies, creating an original movie that seems to have lasted over 8 years since its original release.
In the lead role as Josh it seems that Breckin Mayer has been the perfect choice. He portrays the sort of character that you kind of feel sorry for despite what he has actually done. The back ground given on his character really makes you want him to succeed and get the tape back rather than break Tiffany's heart. While Amy Smart is just a means to an end as Beth, the other woman, she does deliver her performance with style and contributes to a couple of the films funnier moments whilst onscreen with Tom Green.
It is however Green and Seann William Scott that really steal the show and make Road Trip into the kind of comedy you can happily watch more than once. In fact a lot of the scenes involving Green seem almost too gross, yet funny to actually be scripted. Whilst Scott is in familiar territory playing E.L., a character whom is incredibly similar to his character in the American Pie films. The cast as a whole though work very well and even the characters intended to annoy such as Anthony Rapp's performance as Jacob all serve to create an enjoyable movie.
Overall it is a very amusing film that ticks all the boxes for the teen comedy genre. It is a film that seems to be just as funny no matter how many times you've seen it. In many respects there are a number of similarities between Road Trip and the American Pie films and I think it's fair to say all the similarities are good ones, which is probably why it works so well. Unlike the American Pie films they haven't milked the name for all it's worth, but perhaps that's what makes it quite so funny the second and third times around. It probably isn't as well known as American Pie, but if you like those films then you'll love this one.
