I have to say that when I heard about this movie I thought it was going to be another American Pie copy and was less than interested in seeing it. There is only so much of the same type of comedy you can take in one year, but someone in my flat rented it, so I sat down to check it out. It actually surprised me because it is pretty funny.

Picture the scenario. You are an American college student in one part of the country and your girlfriend is in another. You haven't seen each other for ages and well you have urges so you end up sleeping with someone else in the college - happens all the time right? Well, its not often that you also happens to make a video of the whole thing and then accidentally mail this to your girlfriend...but that is what happens to Josh and the rest of the movie is a race across 1800 miles of America to get to her college and intercept the video before she can see it. Along for the ride comes his three friends and back home holding the fort is the very funny Tom Green as Barry who is also our narrator and storyteller...hence some of the more interesting plot embellishments where he is concerned.

In all honesty this doesn't really come close to American Pie. There simpley aren't the great and memorable characters from this movie which that other had. All are pretty much nondescipt other than that of Barry played by Tom Green who was pretty much billed as the big star in this movie when you looked at the trailors. He is actually in very little of the movie itself...although the best bits are still reserved for him it has to be said. The rest of the cast are quite lame in all honest, the lead character Josh being the most wooden of the whole bunch although he is given a pretty much straight role to play, then we have the naughty one, the druggie one and the geeky one...been there done that a thousand times before, its all far too formulaic.

Where this movie does succeed though is in the usual crop of gross out gags and bizarre sitautions. Its all wonderfully juvenile stuff, very much in the vein of American Pie and the thosands of similar movies which have come before and will come after. A few of the scenes do however seem very much contrived - the nudity for the sake of nudity scene for example which seems like a rather pathetic "ner ner, we an show boobs on screen" from the producers rather than having any real point other than to titilate 14 year old boys. That said though, the sperm bank, snake and other scenes are still very funny and everything involving Tom Green is hilarious.

Road Trip is not the most original movie you are likely to see and its difficult to care about the characters when they are quite this underdevluoped, but at the same time it is a movie which is going to make you laugh and that surely is its main point. Its a comedy and it succeeds in making us laugh, so what more can you ask for. Its not perfect, but its fun...nuff said.

Excellent op. Disagree with the negative comments cos I ADORED this film!!!!!! Made me laugh so much more than American Pie - think it was because they didn't talk about every funny scene in Road Trip before the thing came out, unlike Road Trip so I went in blind, almost! Clare
