Whilst settling down to watch Road Trip last night, I was expecting a rip-off and not as funny version of American Pie, OK it is similar in a way, you know the typical sex starved teenagers in the American College movie, but I found it had its own originality to it and some hilarious laughs as well.
The film starts off with Tom Green playing Barry a very strange and unstable student showing a group of people around the College grounds, on a guided tour, but he isn’t doing a very good job of it, so he decides to tell the tour party a story that happened whilst he was attending the College.
The film is then shown as a kind of video diary of what went on, but Green likes to add bits in, especially when it comes to nude girls, so the story goes:
Josh (played by Breckin Meyer) and Tiffany (played by Rachel Blanchard) are childhood sweethearts, they have known each other for their entire life and end up getting pretty serious, there is one problem though, they have to attend two Colleges that are situated 1,800 miles away, right across the other side of the country, so they make a pact to stay faithful to each other and resist the many temptations that come naturally with College life, mainly Sex.
Every day Josh adds more content to his video diary that he is planning on sending to his sweetheart Tiffany, with songs, loving messages and things like that.
Things seem to be going well, when one day, Josh is at a party, in this party is a girl that has fancied him for a while, her name is Beth (played by Amy Smart), she’s Blonde, has a figure to die for and she is very sexy, so as the party goes on, Josh and Beth find themselves in the bedroom (no shock there) and end up making love, the problem is, Beth insisted in filming the event.
Well, as you can guess, Josh’s video diary and the video containing his sexual encounter with Beth get mixed up, and the wrong tape gets sent to Tiffany, to make matters worse (actually this is a blessing in disguise), Tiffany’s Granddad has just died.
So what can he do? There is only one thing to do, Josh along with three of his College buddies E.L (played by Seann William Scott), Rubin (played by Paulo Costanzo) and Kyle (played by DJ Qualls) decide to drive across the country, in the hope of getting their hands on the tape before Tiffany gets back from her Granddads funeral, this gives them three days.
As you can imagine with these type of films, they get up to all kinds of trouble and mischief, which results in some hilarious laughs, the best being when they go to stay at Rubin’s Grand-parents house, but don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for you.
I’ll leave the story there and let you find out what happens on their travels and what happens to the tape.
So what did I think of the movie?
Well actually, I loved it, I found it very funny, actually I found it hilarious and at times I was in tears with laughter, but as you know with these type of movies, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you are a fan of American Pie or Porky’s, then you’ll love this. I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s as funny as American Pie, but it gives it a run for its money and has it’s own originality to it.
The parts are played very well, especially Tom Green who plays the part of the rather Psychotic student very naturally and the guy who played Kyle was pretty convincing playing the College nerdy/geek character, and the story was very good, and it was an all-round enjoyable and very funny movie, so what you waiting for, get it out on Video and watch it.
