lodgers versus their miserly landlord. With lecherous but loveable landlord, Rigsby, obsessed with lovelorn spinster, Ruth Jones and her own affections tangled with African Prince, Philip and later the sophisticated, brylcreem-ed newcomer, Seymour, this hilarious comedy works its way out of the rising damp of unrequited love. Watch as the wallpaper develops a deeper shade of yellow and the dust layer gains another inch, from the first series through to the highly entertaining movie.

This may have had something to do with the fact that Richard Beckinsale who played Alan in the series sadly passed away just before filming started, and so a replacement was bought in.
The cast:
Leonard Rossiter: Rupert Rigsby, the landlord. Frances de la Tour: Ruth Jones, administrator at the local college. What is the plot?
Rigsby rents all of the rooms in his house out to the rest of the main characters, claiming that his house is the next best thing to the Ritz (when all the time it shows more of a lean towards the 'Nitz').
He obviously fancies Ruth, but she doesn't. She fancies Phillip, who appears to be leading her on some of the time but actually interested the rest of it. John introduces his girlfriend in to the equation, and much to Rigsby's disgust brings her back to paint her nude. He only wants to do one thing with her, but her father won't allow her to.
In Rigsby's quest to impress Ruth, he organises a boxing match with Phillip; takes her out to supper, and burns a piece of love wood at the suggestion of Phillip - only to find out later on that it came from the wardrobe.
When Mr Seymour arrives, he and Ruth hit it off straight away - much to Rigsby's disgust again, who had warmed to him initially and wouldn't hear a word said against him. The others all dislike Seymour, and when he takes Ruth away from Rigsby so does he.
However, just as the film ends it all comes out that Seymour is a con; Phillip comes from Croydon, and John has no sexual expereinces that he had talked about. Ruth agrees to entertaining Rigsby, and just as he goes up to her room he trips on the cat and ends up going to hospital.
Is it a patch on the series?
No, all that has been done is the series has been adapted a little and everything just put together in one showing. Although the character has changed a little, you can still see a little of Alan showing through.
Is it worth seeing?
Only if you want to, I only bought the DVD because it was going cheap in Woolworths!

...classic comedy TV show - Rising Damp. It also includes the feature length movie. The DVD length is just under 13 hours, so there is plenty to keep you entertained. The program is all about the main character, Rigby (played by Leonard Rossiter), who rents out rooms in his house to Miss Jones (Frances de la Tour), Philip the African chief (Don Warrington) and student, Alan (Richard Beckinsdale). Rigby, who is very much in love with Miss Jones, fights ...

The Very Best of RisingDamp
~Introduction~
Some points of interest before we start. First broadcast in 1974 RisingDamp was an instant success. Not just because of the wonderful casting or the writing but because of the chemistry between all the cast members.
Cast and Crew
~Eric Chappell~
originally working for the gas board, Eric quit his job and took to writing.
His first play was 'The Banana Box'. This was a moderate success and coincidentally starred Leonard Rossiter, Frances de la Tour and Don Warrington.
Points of interest, in the banana box the landlord was actually called Rooksby.
Philip was already a tenant with his own flat.
Eric went on write RisingDamp but after a complaint from an actual landlord called Rooksby he changed the name to Rigsby.

I would just like to write a review on RisingDamp and its first series, or rather the introduction to what could be one of the best sitcoms this country has ever seen. It was first in existence back in 1974, and stars the following as its main characters:
Mr Rigsby: the late great Leonard Rossiter, who plays the king of bedsit land. He is against everything apart from the delightful Miss Jones, and if any person comes between them then watch out - or else!
Miss Ruth Jones: Frances de la Tour, an aging spinster who won't reveal her age but still likes to think of herself as being younger than she may actually be. She works at the local college (by today's standards this could be classed as a university, by way of what we actually hear of it), and she manages to get a room at the house for a gentleman called 'Mr Smith'.

DVD Description
This spin-off from the 1970's sitcom about a landlord and his oddball assortment of tenants was noticeable for it being made without it's co-star Richard Beckinsdale who sadly died before filming. The plot continues where the TV series left off with Rigsby (Leonard Rossiter) lusting after Miss Jones (Francis De La Tour).
