Rio Bravo [1959] Rio Bravo [1959]
When it comes down to naming the best Western of all time, the list usually narrows to ... more
three completely different pictures: Howard Hawks'
Rio Bravo, Hawks' Red River and John Ford's The
Searchers. About the only thing they all have in
common is that they all star John Wayne. But while
The Searchers is an epic quest for revenge and Red
River, a sweeping cattle-drive drama, Rio Bravo is
a much calmer film. Basically, it comes down to
Sheriff John T Chance (Wayne), his alcoholic
friend Dude (Dean Martin), the hotshot new kid
Colorado (Ricky Nelson), and deputy-sidekick
Stumpy (Walter Brennan), sittin' around in the
town jail, drinkin' black coffee, shootin' the
breeze, and occasionally singin' a song.
Hawks--who, like his pal Ernest Hemingway, lived
by the code of "grace under pressure"--said he
made Rio Bravo as a rebuke to High Noon, in which
sheriff Gary Cooper begged for townspeople to help
him. So, Hawks made Wayne's Sheriff Chance a
consummate professional--he may be getting old and
fat, but he knows how to do his job, and he
doesn't want amateurs getting mixed up in his
business; they could get hurt. If the
configuration of characters sounds familiar, it
should: Hawks remade Rio Bravo two more times--as
El Dorado in 1967, with Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and
James Caan; and as Rio Lobo in 1970, with Wayne,
Jack Elam, and Christopher Mitchum. The film
achieved additional notoriety in the 90s when
Quentin Tarantino revealed that he uses it as a
litmus test for prospective girlfriends. --Jim

A John Wayne classic.
Review of Rio Bravo DVD by Timbo3107

Advantages: It is a classic. Perfect Sunday afternoon film.
Disadvantages: Hard to believe that this was made nearly 50 years agao.

.... Wayne is defined by how well he relates to women, how well he handles pressure and how he reacts to danger. Angie Dickinson of Police Woman fame plays the gambling girl, who enriches the mixture with a nicely judged performance as it is the character of Feathers that manages to calm down Wayne and also to show a more human side of the Sheriff. The film has a great score by one of the great film composers Dimitri Tiomkin who makes good use Dean Martin to sing the end song. The instrumentals throughout do tend to stick and raise the tension throughout the film at the correct points. ---Overall--- Rio Bravo is an action Western, which captures a legendary West that fits the legendary talents of the cast perfectly. What makes the film so special is the relationship between the individual characters, as all have problems that are dealt... Read review

John Wayne Legacy
Review of John Wayne Legacy (Box Set) by Lyn1954

Advantages: The great John Wayne, this box set is perfect for Western fans.
Disadvantages: None

...I have seen all of these films more than once, if you like the old fashioned American films of yesterday together with the legendary John Wayne and many more great actors and actresses this is for you. My favourites are Chisum, Rio Bravo and the wonderful Searchers, with Natalie Wood. The Searchers is a story of a man searching for his neice, together with his adopted nephew. Rio Bravo is a film made later on in his career, and he shows all his charm and charisma also in this film. John Wayne films never let you down and usually the good guy wins, which is how we all want it to be. The rugged scenery in these films is also great, and as in John Wayne films there is often a bit of comedy.... Read review

RIO BRAVO - pure western joy
Review of Rio Bravo DVD by Monogram

Advantages: Great western and very entertaining still
Disadvantages: None

...Hello, everyone! Particularly western movie lovers and devotees of the great Howard Hawks! RIO BRAVO, made in 1958 and first released in early 1959, has proved itself to stand the so-called "test of time". Indeed, 40 years later, this movie is still very watchable and gives the viewer a lot of pleasure. And what a cast! John Wayne! Dean Martin! Ricky Nelson! Angie Dickinson! Walter Brennan! Ward Bond! All ably supported by John Russell, Pedro Gonzales Gonzales and (particularly) Claude Akins. John Wayne - THE Duke - plays Sheriff John T Chance, who acts like a rock of total stability throughout the movie. John Wayne really always plays himself, but there is no harm at all in that, is there? Dean Martin acquits himself particularly well in RIO BRAVO. He plays "Dude", the Sherrif's former deputy, who 2 years before... Read review
