Once you get over the initial cheesiness of the thought of a "cursed videotape", you will really enjoy this movie.
Altogether different from the horror films that we have gotten used to, Ring is a refreshing change. It is a very good example of what a horror film should be. The atmosphere is dark and heavy. The Japanese dialogue and the unfamiliar faces of the actors went to the advantage of the movie, adding more mystery despite the modern setting of the film.
The main source of fear is a young girl who has been given the ability to will people to death. Her appearances are minimal, but her character is strong. You will fear her, sure, but you will certainly not hate her. Beneath her curses and her weird appearance is an ordinary girl who gets hurt just like everyone else. Her life and her death will equally affect us.
Fans of gore will be disappointed. Ring has no bloody scene, just the unsettling atmosphere that will chill you and make you afraid of the dark. No wonder Ring has succeeded is paving the way for more quality and interesting horror films from other Asian countries.
