Sometimes there is a lot to be said about those rare films that not only can rattle a person, but even do it while being made in another country.

This very proper distinction is for the film "Ringu", made by Hideo Nakata, and also is one of the most bone rattling films I have ever seen.

The way it starts is as this.
At its beginning, there are 2 girls who are chatting, enjoying each others company, until one of them tells her friend about seeing a rather strange tape.
After that, She tries to play a joke on a friend of hers, who for some strange reason is not happy while she is clowning around.
Then when her friend goes to the bathroom, she gets distracted, turns around and looks while something terrible happens.

After this, her aunt(Tomoko)not only beings a careful and intense investigation of what happened, but also makes some unsettling discoveries about it.
While discovering that some friends of hers also passed on.

And yet.
What is it about those same images on the tape that not only is rather unsettling to Reiko, but also part of the mystery?
A seas picture, a woman combing her hair in the mirror via 2 different areas.
Some people in one scene moving about ghoulishly, a strange man at the waters edge, and another girl being there.
What odd and unusual mystery do all these clues add up to?
Can she solve it?
Will she and her son also survive as a very grim and vicious countdown of sorts starts?
And will it not leave her with a painful price to endure?

When I saw this film, the visual impact of the slow buildup was like that of an ice wave that just slowly built up, before the impact had hit me.
And with as strong force as a tornado.
It also got me quite spooked when I saw it from the first frame to the end.
This same effect also has not left me after seeing it more, in fact it is heightened.
And in a lot of different ways.

What I also like in this film is the slow and delibate speed that they go through in it while having the viewer endure the buildup in the film to its odd end.
It is also perhaps the most intense and slow buildup here that would also have the viewer to regard the suspence here as a sea that slowly is calm in parts, before a storm hits the sea with both ferocity and savagery.

Likewise, for some viewers there may be an issue here as the film is mostly in subtitles due to being made in Japan, but in my case, I did not mind it a bit.
In fact, I still watched it a lot.

If you would like to get this dvd, do so.
It is quite well made, and very masterfully done.

PS. Just because something is a foreign horror film should not be held against it.
In fact, there are many great masterpieces that are well remembered for more than that.
Even masterpieces from Bava.

:)
