Advantages: Gentle comedy Disadvantages: A bit twee in parts
actors to play the parts?
What does Ian Hamilton think of the film? Well he's delighted with it and doesn't care that us Scots don't like it much. He knows the Americans will love it, they love all things tartan and that's where the real money lies. It seems being a Scottish hero is not enough; he must have the Americans adulation too.
If you're Scottish you might like the film for its gentle humour but be prepared for the bits that will make you cringe. If you're one of the Americans who celebrate your Scottish ancestry by wearing a kilt and playing the bagpipes then you will love it. It's a film that could have been brilliant; it's a pity that they decided to make it for a foreign rather than the Scottish audience.

Advantages: Good acting and storytelling Disadvantages: The making-of could have been better utilised
It is a wonderful thing to be Scottish. But it hasn't always been. Going back centuries, we have been conquered, invaded, and oppressed. As recently as the 1950s, Scotland was referred to by England as North Britain. There was a fledgling movement wanting a parliament for Scotland, to give us our freedom and pride back, but a lot of Scots were made to feel like second class citizens and the Scottish National Party was still developing its ideology. Then along came a group of Glasgow University students who decided it was time to stop talking and start doing. So they did the obvious thing, and reclaimed the Stone of Scone from Westminster Abbey and brought it home to Scotland.
A little bit of history to give you some context if you don't know: the Stone of Scone, also known as the Stone of Destiny, is the ancient coronation stone ...
Advantages: it is good entertaining enough educational way film Disadvantages: it is not too commercial
Niki Caro director of "Whale Rider," does well. She was able to convince the Ngati Konohi Maori tribe, that she should be the one to adapt Maori book to the screen, despite the fact that she's a "pakeha" (a New Zealander of European descent). I’m not sure what "Whale Rider" suppose to be, an anthropological/sociological study of the Maori people or the universal story of female empowerment in traditional male society. Indeed, the book's author, Witi Ihimaera, said he wrote "Whale Rider" as a modern retelling of a Maori legend -- in response to his daughter's complaining about the boy always being the hero. Main protagonist is Pai a Maori girl of 13 whom feels that her destiny is to become the leader of her Maori tribe, a whale rider in order to please her grandfather. She’s not allowed learning warrior skills thought by her ...
