The success Ricky Gervais has enjoyed over the last few years is phenomenal, his creation ‘The Office’ came out of no-where to become one of the best British comedies ever, putting it, and Ricky Gervais, on the same pedestal as classics like ‘Faulty Towers’ and Blackadder alongside legends like John Cleese. Not content with having won 6 BAFTA’s and 2 Golden Globes for his 2 series of the office, Ricky Gervais embarked on the holy grail (no pun intended) of comedy - the stand-up.
His first effort, ‘Animals’ was seen by the majority as a resounding success. It had established stand-up comedians the length and breadth of the country jealous of what Ricky had ‘no right to do’ - be an instant success, with no training, at what they had worked for years at trying to become. Under a year later, Ricky was back with another hour long stand-up routine, this time based (albeit like ‘Animals’ - rather loosely) around Politics.
It is hilarious right from the outset. The opening sketch, with Ricky outside the Houses of Parliament forcing a disabled person (the producer of ‘The Office‘) who is ‘a little bit racial’, out of his wheelchair. Ricky then proceeds to leave him on the ground as he does ’wheelies’ and plays in his chair. From that moment on you know what you are going to get, the jokes will crude, and at times they overstep the line, hence the 18 rating. Put it this way, this is not a DVD I would suggest sitting down to watch with your grandparents! However I can guarantee that the vast majority of people will be in stitches for the whole hour watching the majority of this act.
Without spoiling any punch lines, this show has some of the best comedy that, I certainly, have seen in a long time. Gervais’ elaborate story and mime of the ‘lazy’ and ‘industrious’ mice in their exploits in the run up to winter is pure comedy genius. Other topics that Ricky sends up in his traditional way are, Charities, drought in Africa, war, asphyxiawanking(!), Thora Heard, Stephen Hawking and Pavarotti the list goes on to include amongst others, Ghandi, Hitler and Yoko Ono. From this list you can probably guess the tone of the show will not be suited to all tastes, and even though these topics have invariably been covered before by other comedians, the way Ricky sends them up is hilarious.
The show then moves onto ‘study’ (for Gervais likes to see his shows as ‘lectures‘!) nursery rhymes and fables, my favourite being when he examines the moral and story behind ‘Humpty Dumpty’ ( sorry couldn’t resist a few quotes! “don’t send horses to perform medical procedures!” and “if your surnames Dumpty, don’t call your firstborn Humpty! He’s already an egg!”).
The highlight of the show however is a story about a leaflet, on the subject of Aids prevention from the early 1990’s, there are 10 points to it, not only is it absolutely side-splittingly funny , but you will be able to quote the glorious punch line to this story for the rest of your life! - seriously!
DVD’s nowadays are judged not just on the main content, but on the extra’s that come with them, and in this respect ‘Politics’ doesn’t disappoint. Included on the DVD is the stand-up routine of Ricky’s support act Robin Ince, a ‘living with Ricky’ documentary which really makes you realise how mad he is, and what an annoying person he would be to live with! There is also another hilarious interview with Karl Pilkington, who is the producer of Ricky Gervais radio show. This 20 minute interview quite possibly steals the show, with his deadpan views and outrageous comments, about a variety of (political) topics, including race, age and disability, he comes out with things like how you “never see a 30-40yr old Chinese person, they age overnight - like a pear.” and how you “never see an old person eating a Twix.”
The obligatory commentary on the main show, is pure improvised genius, it is just Ricky and Robin Ince (his support act and friend) and is taken up mainly by Ricky reading a diary he wrote on behalf of Robin and it quite simply inspired comedy. If you are one of those people who generally skips over the extra’s on a DVD, do not do that on this one, as good as the stand-up itself is, the commentary and interview with Karl Pilkington are the best parts of this film.
Therefore I would highly recommend the Politics DVD to any fan of the Office or of Ricky Gervais. Or to any fan of British comedy at its best. This is a must for anybody who enjoys comedy, and especially any fans of stand-up comedy.
Advantages: Gervais does it again! Disadvantages: Well, may be a bit "distasteful" for one or two...
...thought why not continue the Ricky Gervais trend by having a gander at one of his stand-up shows - "Politics"...
After the world-wide success of the Office, picking up award after award, and then the unprecidented sell-out success of his first ever stand-up show, "Animals", Gervais came back with another attempt, this time, somewhat vaguely, looking at the world of Politics...
...The show opens up with a pre-recorded sketch with Gervais outside ... ...surname evades my memory at the moment, but he produced the Office with Gervais), who himself is "a bit racial" - Gervais' words, not mine - and then opts to prod fun at him, being disabled and originally from Egypt, in a somewhat faux-pas kind of way. The slightly crude, maybe even controversial comedy gives an insight into what to expect here...fear not though, it's rated 18, so I'm sure we're all grown-up enough to take it like a pinch of salt! ...

Advantages: Pulls no punches on sensitive areas Disadvantages: Might be too full on for some
...lot has been said about Ricky Gervais, the majority of which is very positive, but which principally relates to his hilarious invention, The Office. However, we must realise that as well as having the ability to orchestrate the squirmy, off note, painful comedy found in The Office that propelled it to instant aclaim, Gervais has got stand up down to a T. Politics is his second attempt at taking the stand up world by storm, and he certainly manages ... ...some of his jokes may be more than slightly offensive to some, such as his opening film clip with his wheelchair bound producer, who is described as "leg mental, not head mental." Whilst this really sets the tone for the rest of the piece, the 18 certificate should prevent the younger and more impressionable viewer from approving of material that is most definately tongue in cheek.
Certainly, Politics contains a wide spread of hilarious material, ...

Advantages: Very funny Disadvantages: Very offensive
Ricky Gervais' Politics DVD is a fantastic piece of stand-up comedy. It is pretty offensive most of the way through and so not for the easily-offended! The opening should be a big clue. There is a pre-recorded sketch of Ricky Gervais outside Parliament poking fun at someone in a wheelchair. Ok I made it sound bad. In actual fact the man in the wheelchair is his fellow producer on the Office. But if you didn't know this (and I didn't) you might find ... ...show as though it is a series of lectures. The topics are all serious enough but do not stand a chance of remaining that way at the hands of Gervais. Some of these include:
Alzheimers, Stephen Hawkins, Ghandi, Hitler, Holocaust,
Slavery, Famine,
AIDS.
EXTRAS
A frightening insight into living with Gervais - made me feel slightly uncomfortable, as his oddness did not seem to be put on. Quite frightening but fascinating!

Advantages: A hilarious comedy package with brilliant extras. Disadvantages: None!
...Karl is a friend from Ricky Gervais' XFM radio show days and is hilarious to watch, especially when he explains why he doesn't agree with the model of infinity that an infinite amount of chimps would type the complete works of shakesphere, justifying this with 'there hasn't been one publication from a monkey...we've had years, they have been around longer than us'. Living with Ricky is also brilliant, seeing him annoy his suporting actor on the tour, ... ...your first born humpty...he's already an egg!'. Although this doesn't sound hugely political, its still fantastic and Ricky does somehow manage to include references to Hilter, Ghandi and Marxism. So, if you missed this on TV the other week, buy it now! Its worth it just for the extra features! ...

Advantages: Absolutley hilarious. A must see for all comedy/Gervais fans Disadvantages: NONE!!
The creator of "The Office" Ricky Gervais is back for his second live stand up at the London Palace Theatre after the hilarious success of his first stand up, Animals. Gervais is the winner of 6 BAFTAS and 2 Golden Globes for the increadibly funny series "The Office" and you can expct nothing less from him for this stand up show.
His humour is exactly the same as David Brent in the Office and quite often over steps the mark, but only in the way ... ...clip outside the houses of parliment with, as he calls, a little wheel chair fellow who he forces out of his chair whilst he takes it for a spin. During the show standing in his firing line are Adolph Hitler and facing the most hilarious abuse is Stephen Hawkings who according to Gervais is not a genious but is pretentious!.
For me there are two highlights in this stand up show. The first is where he explains about a leaflet he picked up whilst ...

Advantages: Some fo the best stand-up comedy out there Disadvantages: Ribs hurt and hours are wasted
Did you love the office? The long pauses? The witty lines? The comedy timing? It doesn't matter. Whether you did or didn't RickyGervais's stand-up comedy is a totally different kettle of fish.
Gervais has released this combination of his two stand-up shows 'Animals' and 'Politics'. Inside this box set contains a couple of hours of comedy gold.
The way RickyGervais grabs an audience is what immediately makes him a funny person. He doesn't do the whole spontaneous speeches act like Eddie Izzard, he doesn't do the quickfire one-liners like Jimmy Carr,he just appears, and is funny. It is simply a clever and funny man on a stage. He gives his opinions on many matters across the two DVDs...
'Animals' sees Gervais perform his FIRST EVER stand-up comedy show. This show begins with some funny short films where Gervais ruffles up ...
Gervais box set.
On here is the three stand up shows he's done, politics, animals and fame.
I must say after watching all three my favourite still is politics, however the new fame DVD Is really funny too, and just shows that Ricky can come up with other material and his 3 live shows are totally different.
Now because I got this for Christmas I was unsure about how much it costed, after going on hmv online iv found the price slashed from £35 to now only £12.
I still actually cant believe it, these 3 great DVDs for only £12, which is what they cost each.
So if you are a fan of RickyGervais, and if your not a fan of RickyGervais, then I urge you to get this, because its so funny and you really wont regret it.
Also if you do like these dvds, the other dvds to look out for from him, are the office series 1 and 2 and the Christmas ...
Advantages: Really funny, Ricky at his best Disadvantages: Funny, Ricky at his best, again
Just one of my favourite lines from Rickys stand up dvd, now this pack contains his first and second stand up comedy performances. Now if your like me and love Mr. Gervais for his brilliant talent towards comedy, then you will love this, however this is not for those who are easily offended. The first dvd (Animals) starts of with a cut scene, dubbed by Ricky explaining about some animal behavour, and it is well, rather offensive, but then the actual stand up comedy is brilliant. Remeber the office? Did you watch Extras? Have you seen him in any of the films? Well don't bother, these dvds are different from those!! Ricky doesn't write jokes as such, not like Peter Kaye, or Jimmy Carr, there is none of that, in these Ricky tells it how it is, yes it's comedy, yes it's offenive and my god it's funny. Good material for a lads night in ...
