Richard Gere - An Officer And A Gentleman / Internal Affairs / Primal Fear (Hero Triple) (Box Set)

Advantages: Gere's performance
Disadvantages: storyline a bit weak

...This has to be one of the best films that I've seen Richard Gere act in. He stars alongside Andy Garcia (well worth watching in anything) and Laurie Metcalf (of Roseanne fame, she was the sister) who's surprisingly good playing it straight. Gere plays a corrupt and thoroughly sleazy cop who is under investigation by Garcia & Metcalf who work for internal affairs. The film centres round Gere's dodgy deals, his intimidation and manipulation of people and Garcia's obsession with nailing him. The storyline is relatively middle of the road and really centres around Gere winding people up, avoiding detection and Garcia obsessing about him. Inevitably of course at the end Gere gets his comeupance. I don't really remember much of the plot as such as it's a couple of years since I've seen the film. The reason for the review... ...Tale of romance, friendship and growth. Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) enters to become a navy pilot as he is tepted by the glamorous lifestyle. At first he has a bad attitude but along the way he learns many things and develops extremely. The local women are portrayed badly as just wanting a pilot husband, howver Mayo falls for one which leads to more. Lou Gossett Jnr. won an Academy Award for his brilliant portrayal of a tough drill instructor. David Keith plays Zack's struggling fellow candidate. Advantages: Richard Gere looking great in a uniform
Disadvantages: Heroine not 100% believable

...An Officer and a Gentleman is a timeless classic. Probably a Chick Flick with the ladies loving Richard Gere in his white naval officer's uniform. The fact the he ends goes for the factory girl, breaks the social/class barrier, but found the way that the factory girls lusting after the naval training offers, and pining all their hopes for success on bagging themselves a rich husband a little behind the times and reminiscent of 'Pride and Predjudice'. It was made in 1981 though, and times have changed so the perception that you need the successfull man's glory to bask in, rather than making your own descisions and way in life, does make one cringe in this day and age.
