(film only review)
There's a number of films I want to see, but never seem to have time or money to go to the cinema. This was one of them. I was intrigued to find out what the film, that gave Kate Winslett a Golden Globe winning performance, would be like. I had read mixed reviews of 'Revolutionary Road', but didn't read anything that put me off seeing it. So, on a long flight (there seems to be an odd theme here, with my film/DVD reviews) this came up on the listings, so grabbed the chance to check it out.
'Revolutionary Road' is a simple film with a simple plot. A married couple, move to a new road, Revolutionary Road. They are young with dreams. They want to do well for themselves and their two kids, and live life uncompromisingly. Set in the 1950s their dream transpires to immigrate to Paris, which at the time, was something of a mission, especially with two young children. The film examines how we can become our own obstacles and fall pray to negative opinions of others, jeopardising our own aspirations. Should people settle for the humdrum life, or push to achieve our dreams? What lengths would we go to fulfilling these dreams, or will we let life get in the way and become victims of the daily rat race? How do you break free, without breaking up?
Reunited, Kate Winslett and Leonardo Di Caprio star as Alice and Frank Wheelers respectively. A far cry away from their onscreen romance as the tragic heroes in 'Titanic'. As one might expect, both performances were superb. We are introduced to the pair right at the start of the movie, as they explode into a fight, affirming their convictions to character and their talent as actors. There is an unmistakable chemistry between the two of them and it was a delight to watch them on screen, doing more justice to their partnership than they ever did in the film with the sinking ship.
Based on the 1961 novel by Richard Yates, this film is relevant for today as much as it was then. Sam Mendes (director and husband to Ms.Winslett) crafts an intimate portrayal of the family struggling with society and their place in it. Kathy Bates also stars as the realtor who introduces the couple to their home in Revolutionary Road, lending another dose of stella performance.
I can understand why some people might find this film boring and right (or is it write?) it off because not a lot happens. To be fair, they may have a point, but for me, the beauty of the film is in its simplicity and observation of the human psyche. I quite like that not a lot happens. Although, to say that is probably unfair also. The plot is interestingly dealt to us, but not action packed, with a nice structure to keep the story flowing without going stale. There are high points and low points, but not enough to keep the Hollywood blockbuster action lovers satisfied. It feels like it has the nature and intent of an independent film, with a Hollywood team behind it.
This is a film I would buy, for it's slick style set in the 50s, with superb performances from all. I'm really curious to read the book too, to see where it started. Whilst this film won't sit in my list of all time favourite films, I did enjoy it and would recommend to those who like films with a grittier stance than the all conquering Hollywood blockbusters.

Advantages: acting Disadvantages: storyline a bit too dull for some
...Slumdog Millionaire, The Reader, and Revolutionary Road. However, whilst the greatest strength of the first two is the plot or storyline, the power behind Revolutionary Road comes in the tour de force of acting given by all involved. THE PLOT:
The story itself is fairly low key: Frank and April (Leo Di Caprio and Kate Winslett) are a normal couple in 1950s America. On the surface they are liked and respected, but go a little deeper and they're both ... ...move to Paris to follow the life they always wanted, but April's new pregnancy soon puts stop to that, and the couple spiral down into brokenness.
WAS IT ANY GOOD:
Although perhaps an average story, it is the acting that powers this film. Di Caprio and Winslett are just amazing in giving performances that are instantly authentic and believable. Perhaps their Titanic chemistry set them in good stead, but they are just completely awe inspiring in ...

A seriously involving and at times difficult watch, this is an amazing achievement in film. Showing once again that Sam Mendes has an uncanny insight into what makes people tick. The performances, especially from Winslet are stellar (as a side note, I don't see how this performance wasn't rewarded instead of The Reader, as I think this to be equal or better, but I guess that film involves the Holocaust so....), and the set design is gorgeous in a ... ...it's prime female star as it was a baptism of brutal fire for them both, given that it's the first time Mendes has directed his wife in a film and this was by no means an easy first film to see how that goes! I can't recommend this film enough, as I know some people could possibly be put off by the heavy subject matter. But please give it a go, as I think you will find it rewarding in many ways, if uncomfortable at times. ...

Advantages: The cast is great, production values impeccable, music is fine Disadvantages: Cruise gives worst performance in long time, story is handled the wrong way
(with its emblam-marked chow hall and swimming pool), the communications complex and Wolf's Lair. Once again, Singer's frequent collaborator and friend John Ottman contributes both as editor and music composer, with the moody latter work making up for the loose former.
In conclusion, I don't think I'm being too harsh here. "Valkyrie" remains quite watchable; it's just never credible, and you will soon forget about the film even if the story itself will always be remembered. I recommend you wait for "Valkyrie" on DVD, as there are other films coming soon which you'd be better off waiting for, including "RevolutionaryRoad", "Doubt", and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". Happy New Year to all of you, and thank you for reading! Chris :)

Review
This film is so good it is devastating (Chicago Sun-Times, 22/05/2009)
Handsomely done and beautifully acted (Empire, 22/05/2009)
The best thing about REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, a cool-blooded and disquieting adaptation of Richard Yates' 1961 novel about a powerfully unhappy Connecticut couple, is that it doesn't end with that rote vision of bourgeois anomie. It only begins there (Entertainment Weekly, 22/05/2009)
Certainly there's no shortage of talent in the movie, which displays all the fastidious attention to detail... you expect from this kind of prestige production (New York Times, 22/05/2009)
Magnificent (News Of The World, 05/06/2009)
DiCaprio is in peak form, bringing layers of buried emotion to a defeated man. And the glorious Winslet defines what makes an actress great, blazing commitment to a character and the range to make every nuance felt (Rolling Stone, 22/05/2009)
The best American film of 2008 (San Francisco Chronicle, 22/05/2009)
Winslet and DiCaprio are mesmerising (Sunday Express, 05/06/2009)
This is a romantic rematch that fans have fantasised about for 12 years (The Times, 22/05/2009)
This is a sobering, well-observed film that doesn't fully hit the mark but sets up enough pleasing ideas to chew on regarding ambition, marriage and ideals of how to live one's life, individually and as a couple (Time Out London, 22/05/2009)
Mendes' classy lit-flick makes all the right moves: the cast cry quality; the look is lustrous (Total Film, 22/05/2009)
Indeed, all of the performers in the film truly shine, and all of them can probably thank Sam Mendes for creating an ideal environment (TV Guide, 22/05/2009)
REVOLUTIONARY ROAD is a very good big screen adaptation of an outstanding American novel--faithful, intelligent, admirably acted, superbly shot (Variety, 22/05/2009)
DVD Description
Those who were waiting for the romantic reunion of TITANIC's Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet may be surprised by what they find in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD. The movie begins with a sweet scene where Frank (DiCaprio) and April (Winslet) meet at a party, but the rest of this drama--based on Richard Yates's novel--is devoted to watching the collapse of their marriage and their selves in 1950s suburbia. Frank works at a job he hates in New York City, then commutes home to two children and a wife who feels none of them belong in their cookie-cutter town. One person who has faith in the couple is their estate agent, Helen (a fine Kathy Bates), who decides that they would be ideal role models for her mentally unstable son, John (BUG's Michael Shannon), and introduces them to him. However, Frank and April's marriage is not as perfect as it seems to the outside world, and the audience gets to witness the painful demise of their relationship. With its commentary on conformity and finding identity, REVOLUTIONARY ROAD bears more than a passing resemblance in both theme and tone to the TV series MAD MEN and director Sam Mendes's previous film AMERICAN BEAUTY. The characters here may live in a polite age where men wear ties and hats and women clean the house in skirts and heels, but the dialogue often enters brutal territory. Less capable actors wouldn't have been able to capture the volatile chemistry between Frank and April, but DiCaprio and Winslet are as wonderful at uttering sweet nothings as they are at tearing each other apart with verbal barbs. Mendes, directing his wife, Winslet, for the first time, is a perfect match for the source novel's lack of sentimentality and its wry commentary on life in the 1950s that still resonates half a century later.
