Forget reality - watch existenz

Advantages: Great & original story - excellent actors
Disadvantages: The food they are served is a tad icky

I’d seen a couple of trailers for this & it looked pretty good but the actual movie was excellent. The basic story revolves around a games designer & her new game. Computer games aren’t like they are now – the games modules are made of living tissues & plug directly into the central nervous system via the spinal cord. Jude Law plays a character who gets tangled up with the games designer, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh. It’s a very different story ...
...the actors are great especially Jude Law. Throughout the movie, you are often unsure what is reality & what is not? The ending too is kind of uncertain but unlike many films this didn’t bother me. Usually if the end is not neatly tied up, I get very frustrated as to what happens to the characters but this just fits with the whole tone of the movie. ...

Its Bizzare

Advantages: Some interesting ideas
Disadvantages: A bit on the weird side

...future, in the world of Existenz to play a 'computer' game you now need a bioport with which to interface with a game pod, a being that interacts with your spinal core and nervous system to produce the ultimate in 'virtual reality'. At the beta test of the latest system & game the designer comes under attack & hides within the game itself. What follows is over an hour of bizzareness & weird goings on. As with most other David Cronenberg you get horrible ...

weird

Advantages: good effects
Disadvantages: hard to follow

The plot here seems to concern the attempted assassination of the world's foremost virtual reality game creator (Jennifer Jason Leigh). The games are downloaded into a bio-pod implanted into your spinal cord through a living device that is an organism made of mutant amphibian and reptile parts. Cronenberg loves to devise bizarre and often revolting visuals involving the dissection of organs and this film is no different. What follows is a series ...

Great Buy

Advantages: Great Story
Disadvantages: non-anamorphic

This movie was recommended to me by a friend of a friend, and as such, it was with some trepidation that I ordered it. A long time fan of sci-fi I was pleasantly surprised by this gem of a tale, which is both disturbing (characteristically Cronenberg) and highly comical (the running dog delivery and cApitaliSation jokes.) Equally nice is the presentation, with the image (although non-anamorphic) being crisp and sharp throughout. The sound stage is ...
...in the final sequences. So far as extras go, this is another example of the emerging trend of identical, if not superior R2 releases. On a par with the acclaimed Canadian release, but benefiting from PAL`s higher resolution, we are treated to 3 commentaries and a good documentary. The only features going against this disc are the `exclusive animated Dreamcast` feature, which is merely a misplaced advert for the console (the movie has a 'very strong ...

Gruesomely gripping

Advantages: Superb story and twist. Very absorbing
Disadvantages: Not for the squeamish

David Cronenberg has made gruesome an art form and there are moments in this clever film which are testament to that,(The snack eaten by Jude Law is one of these), but it's the constantly intriguing story which keeps you glued to the screen - the twist is infinitely better than the one in Sixth Sense and I doubt you will get it unless of course you are clairvoyant. It revolves around a time in the not too distant future when game playing is something ...
...spinal cord) into and actually believe you're in it. From what we're lead to believe this isn't too far away in reality so it makes the film even more fascinating. Cronenberg sticks totally to the intrigue element so keeps us absorbed and occasionally disgusted! Lovely little sci-fi. ...

It is crap!!

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

I think this is one of the worst movies i have ever seen in my life. It was wierd, stupid and rediculous. It was so bad i asked for my money back from the video shop. I would recomend no one to watch it as it is a complete waste of time. I dont know one person that said it was even reasonably good. This is suitible for everyone as everyone is able to laugh at it and mock it. Although i think you will fall asleep after about 20 mins. Also i think ...

No excuse for its existence

Advantages: the idea might have been good...
Disadvantages: ...the result is dreadful

Fortunately, I didn't manage to go and see this one in a cinema, but the interest was still there - so blame it on the title, the director or the actors - I rented it on DVD. And what a mistake to make....well, mind you, it could have been worse, I could have bought it. This film is one of the most predictable, weak, disgusting and pointless nonsense I've come across during my years of animateur research. It's a game in a game in a game - oops, ...
...know after about ten minutes, if you aren't one of the people that were actually astonished when the Titanic sank or Harry and Sally got together. It's one of those cinematic adventures where you think afterwards that the idea was good, which it probably was, but the result just doesn't come across and even the normally very convincing acting skills of Jude Law and Jennifer J Leigh are poor in this one. Lost somewhere between a horror version of ...
