The Thin Red Line
Review of Zulu (DVD) by
jimbuck
Advantages: Only to the survivors
Disadvantages: To the Zulus
...make a good target for Zulu spears.
One of the most awe inspiring sequences was not visual.
Hearing the sound of the masses of Zulus banging their cow
hide shields with their spears in a relentless rhythm would
chill the blood in my veins.
After seeing the film umpteen times, usually at Xmas, the
story gets boring but those drumming spears still get to me.
"Don't throw those bloody spears at me" is attributed to
Michael Cain speaking ...

Advantages: See Opinion
Disadvantages: See Opinion
...and then imagine hundreds of Zulu warriors bearing down on you from all sides, and try to feel the courage and faith in comrades, training, discipline, equipment and superior officers which made the men stand and fight and survive. Then walk to the foot of one of those hills and imagine the courage and discipline which it took for the men to charge again and again into the disciplined withering fire of a regiment - whose brothers in arms in the not ...

Thundering feet
Review of Zulu (DVD) by
janharper
Advantages: Great family viewing
Disadvantages: None really
Zulu is a real classic film. It is exciting, fast moving, and, without all those modern day effects it still has a fabulous atmosphere.
The sound of the Zulu army approaching is what attracts me most to the film. The rhythmic drumming gets louder and louder and it is caused by the soles of the warriors' feet thumping on the ground. The sound grows in intensity and sounds like an approaching freight train. The soldiers put their heads to the ground ...

Clockwork Orange
Review of Zulu (DVD) by
sdc123456
Advantages: Highly memorable, well made film
Disadvantages: not the most moralistic film made
A work of raddled genius, Stanley Kubrick's hugely controversial 1971 film has lost none of its power to shock.
It tells the story of Alex, a 15 year old who rampages his way through a dystopian future, fuelled by a love of ultra-violence, hallucinogenic milk, and Beethoven's Ninth. When he is finally imprisoned by the state, he is helpless against the ministrations of government psychologist Dr Brodsky, who 'cures' him of his anti-social ways.
It ...

Dont shoot till you see the whites of there eyes
Review of Zulu (DVD) by
dreamscancometrue
Advantages: Good action movie
Disadvantages: may seem a bit dated on effects
Zulu in my opinion has to go down as one of the best movies ever made.
Some may say the true makings of Michael Caine who plays a typical English officer by the name of Bromhead, his command is a small outpost at Rorke's Drift, South Africa, in charge of the 24th Regiment of Foot in the year of 1879, they later become known as the South Wales Borderers.
Nobody was taking the threat of the Zulu's that serious and the British politicians back in ...

A Fine Rousing War Film
Review of Zulu (DVD) by
kagito
Advantages: great script, superb acting
Disadvantages: none, see review
...Natal, Africa. An army of Zulu warriors destroyed a huge British garrison and heads toward the smaller Rorke's Drift. A minister warns unless they abandon the post, all will die.
Naturally, the soldiers stand their ground. The small garrison of 120 men is led by Lt. John Chard(Stanley Baker). His battle tatics are constantly at odds with Lt. Gonville Bromhead(Micheal Caine), a by-the-book officer who calls for retreat. Also in this film is a missionary ...

Advantages: good combat sequences, lots of character, talk sequences good
Disadvantages: old film, characters old now.
...hundred soldiers against thousands of zulu warriors. The zulus had guns aswell as spears, one of the best seens was when they did the bull formation and kept flicking there shields, at the british soldiers. They were given the job of defending the outpost until help arrived. The best actor was michael caine who was responsible for the british soldiers at the outpost. It was also a true story set in the time when the british empire was in command of ...

Probably the Best film ever
Review of Zulu (DVD) by
eatmorepies
Advantages: British Supremacy over the odds/ action all the way/ immensely detailed
Disadvantages: perhaps a bit slow to get to the real action
Zulu is one of the great action thriller's of the twentieth Century and keeps you hooked throughout. The battle at Rorke's drift in 1879 is painstakingly reconstructed in great detail, a marvellous feat given the age of the film.
The film portrays what the British are capable of acheiving when they really put their minds to it, no matter how high the odds are stacked against us.
The film of course is important not only for it's historical significance, ...

Review of Zulu (DVD) by
lithfrasir
Advantages: Great battle scenes
Disadvantages: few but old fashioned outlook.
...of 4000 Zulus in the Zulu wars of the 1870s.
The battle scenes are inredible. With countless extras forfilling the role of the Zulus to create an enoumassly intimidating force. It is a shame that films like these are rarely made any more. It is very much a last gasp of British glorification of colonialism but maintains a deep respect for the Zulus whom the British were trying to subdue.
It is the clash of cultures and the way in which this ...

Christmas regular
Review of Zulu (DVD) by
dave27
Advantages: Caine, Baker, the scenery
Disadvantages: Too many re-runs
Zulu might be a good or even a great film, but when you get it on the box every Christmas for the last twenty years, it gets a bit much. The problem is that you're so sick of it and know so much about it that you never actually sit down and watch it all the way through - in fact, I have to admit that I do not remember EVER watching it from start to finish.
Now, that's the problem the film has to contend with - having said all of that, it is a pretty ...

Review of Zulu (DVD) by

Advantages: Brilliant script, acting, photography and sound track.
Disadvantages: TV saturated with repeats.
...sides. That is what makes Zulu such a rousing peice of film making.
With a great sound track, great photography, great script and great acting, this film is..well, GREAT!!
Watch it, and you will want to grow some side burns, don a pith helmet and start calling people "Lad". ...
