Advantages: It's Tom and Meg, you have to watch Disadvantages: I can never get my hair to look like hers
F.O.X – Fox. Joe Fox, how dare he do THAT to ‘The Shop Around The Corner’!! I suppose that for the premise of the film this harsh act had to take place, but it REALLY is a lovely shop. OK, OK, I know it’s only a film, but it’s the only one with Tom Hanks in that I really got miffed at with his character, if only he would make up his mind, nice or nasty? But lets face it, it’s Tom, he HAS to be nice in the end.
... ...they have in common is that they sell books, and one has a bigger empire than the other, it can only spell disaster. She hates him, he wants her business, and just like almost always in real life, the big guy..what do you think? This excellent Rom Com has all the ingredients that make a true chick flick, and one that even seems to appeal to some boys amazingly.
Nora Ephron, screenplay writer and director, has worked her magic like she did in ‘Sleepless ...

Advantages: Funny In Some Places Disadvantages: No Originality
My initial thought was oh no Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan together again. In this film Meg Ryan plays the owner of a small family book store. Tom Hanks plays the owner of a large book store chain that is moving in to compete with Meg Ryan's small operation. Both of the film's main characters live in New York and enjoy their regular online experiences thanks to America On Line. They mainly chat through e-mail. Personal situational problems are shared by ... ...film used brief e-mails rather than the rather substantial ones that "online love" usually will entail. Tom Hanks' character, figures out early on that his online companion is the female owner of a competing book chain. He uses situational manipulation techniques to get closer to his female friend with each meeting, while carefully keeping the fact that they are friends via e-mail a closely guarded secret. This perhaps spoils any possible romance ...

Advantages: Easy to watch, well told tale Disadvantages: Predictable, but aren't they all
Some films are designated oozy cutie films that are tailor made for those romantic evenings in with the spouse/partner, or those tear spilling evenings when you are alone wondering why you cannot get someone just like Tom or Meg, why fate has dealt you the losing hand and why your life is like a pile of poop.
But…what the hey?
Seriously, these films seem to fall off the conveyor belt like a ready-made doll, and you know what? You just cannot ... ...just so the film studios can make big bucks and the actors can get paid millions for doing nothing much save for looking cute/brave/pretty/handsome…
You’ve Got Mail is one such film.
We watched it again last week and immediately fell into the oozy cutie trap. We watched the love between Tom and Meg blossom, we laughed at the whimsical comedy scenes.
So, to the plot…

Following the success of Sleepless in Seattle, it was inevitable that sooner or later a studio would get Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks back together for another movie.
You’ve Got Mail not only takes the two stars from Sleepless, but also the director, and why not – there’s no need to break up a winning team. The basic synopsis is as follows: Hanks and Ryan met in a “over 30s” chat room on the internet and have been in communicating ... ...exchanged any personal details but are drawn together by their electronic conversations. Ryan is the owner of a small children’s bookshop, threatened by the opening of a discount book superstore around the corner, run by Hanks. In business they are enemies, not knowing about their private relationship.
Extra features include a trailer, director’s commentary, a featurette, a look at New York’s West Side, isolated score (Dolby Digital ...

Advantages: Romantic comedy for all the family Disadvantages: This type of film dosen't appeal to evrerybody
You've Got Mail stars two of the biggest and most popular names in the movie biz - Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The story goes like this: Tom Hanks plays Joe Fox, owner of large chain store "Fox Books", contionously gobbling up smaller specialised book stores that it happens to open nearby. Meg Ryan (Kathleen Kelly) is one of these people, she runs the little town book shop "Shop Around The Corner" and is less than excited about the prospect of closing ... ...that if they just got to talk to the other person, then they would see them for the person they truely are. Advantages: Nice easy going film. Disadvantages: Nothing awe inspiring
I love romantic comedies, easy going and relaxing to watch, perfect wind down escapism.
So how does this film fit in, well, the story line is nasty corporate book shop owner (Tom Hanks) has an e-mail relationship with small independent children book shop owner (Meg Ryan). They get on brilliantly in cyber space. But Tom Hanks opens a store near Meg's and disaster ensues, she hates him. Or does she really. That is the basic plot and it works quite ... ...is as usual excellent, but this film is not a classic, but neither is it terribly poor, just a nice relaxing film. Not one that will live long in the memory but one which is just pleasant to watch.

...Rosi (a.k.a Shopgirl)'s review on You've got Mail :~
*Plot*
Kathleen Kelly and Joe Fox are business rivals. They are both in the book industry, and while Kathleen owns a nice, cosy, children's bookshop (The Shop Around The Corner), Joe is one of the owners of Fox Books, a big, mean, discount superstore that's threatening to put TSATC out of business. For good. That could be the end of the story. Kathleen's shop goes out of business, Joe Fox wins, ... ...in an anonymous chat room, and fell head-over-desktops in love. But what they don't know is who they've actually fallen in love with.
*Actors*
The main characters are played by Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, who as some of you will remember, came together firstly in Sleepless in Seattle, which was a huge-box office hit. This film is similar, but only involves the internet. Parker Posey also stars in it as Joe's annoying girlfriend Patricia Eden.

Advantages: Good romantic comedy Disadvantages: Lacking charm
You’ve got mail is about Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) who owns a quaint little bookshop in New York called “shop around the corner.” The bookshop belonged to her deceased mother. She lives with her fiancé (Greg Kinnear) and her main hobby is writing emails to a mysterious stranger she met in a chat room. The fellow in question is Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) is the son of the owner of “fox books” a major commercial chain of bookstores. ... ...and takes her trade away, a bitter war breaks out between Kathleen and Joe with neither knowing that they are each others email pals. Steve Zahn and Parker Posey were sadly under used (both are great character actors in my opinion). However Greg Kinnear provided good support as Ryans Fiancé.
It was really good to see Tom and Meg back together again and it is still nice to watch them fall in love, it provides the odd giggle here and there. On viewing ...
