Advantages: Good story basis, well defined and portayed characters, good special effects Disadvantages: Run of the mill plot
X-Men is a slick, fun and entertaining movie for teenagers and adults. The look is cartoon characters in human form, similar to that of Batman Forever or Dick Tracey. The original Marvel Comics idea of humankind evolving through mutations which start to show up in teenagers is an interesting concept. The main story is somewhat similar to other movies of this genre in that an evil mastermind is attempting to take over the world with a devilishly fiendish ... ...However, in this case, as in the Star Wars movies the selected few have the chance to join either side. Though if you have a particularly nasty nickname and some scary or gross mutations you tend to feel aligned to the baddies.
The characters in the movie are well defined and portrayed. The action is fast with well choreographed fighting scenes, that have a Matrix feel to them. The special effects are up to scratch, but nothing new. A thoroughly ...

Review of X-Men (DVD)
X-men was a movie I just wasn't interested in seeing. But after being dragged along to the cinema, rather reluctantly, I have to admit I really enjoyed it! I was expecting to get a couple of hours kip but I found myself really getting into it. I'd never even heard of X-men and knew nothing about the characters, but this just didn't matter. The film was made in a way that anyone, any age could follow and enjoy. I now take back my comment that it is ...
Advantages: Everything Disadvantages: The cinema I saw it in.
...it works, thats why the X-men have hit our screens. The X-Men is not like the others(Batman included),it is far better.
The characters are perfectly thought out, look good, and perform even better. I think the "bad guys" are a tad dojy, but they can be excused. My favourite character has to be Wolverine, as he appears more normal than the rest.
The storyline is full of action and is very fast paced, if you dont pay attention you will loose the ... ...think it is a film for people of all ages, even though it is 12. I am 17 and a 19 year old friend liked it aswell. You dont need to know anything about the comics but if you do it makes it better as you know more about the characters. ...
Advantages: Fast paced strong story carried by good acting Disadvantages: £5.50 entrance charge at Cinema
Whether you are young or old this film should appeal even if you no nothing about the original comic book characters.
The film is set in the near future and is about a US Senator trying to pass a bill which means that all mutants need to be registered. There are two main teams of mutants the good guys led by Professor X (Patrick Stewart next gen) and the bad guys led by Magneto (Sir Ian Mckellan lots of Shakespeare films!!) Magneto has kidnapped ... ...special radiation machine to turn all normal humans into mutants, however, Professor X and his team dont plan on letting that happen and when one of their team Rogue (Anna Paquin The Piano) is kidnapped they chase the baddies to Liberty Island for a showdown. Great effects and very good acting make this film a fantasy story that could almost be believable, the ending is great and leaves the way open for a decent follow up film.
Fingers crossed that ...
"X-men" is a well done sci-fi action film for all action fans: especially for those who as kids dreamed of having special powers themselves. Each of the main mutant characters has a special ability and during the film I sometimes found myself thinking about which of those abilities I would choose if I were given the chance. Of course all of those special abilities are visible in the film's spectacular special effects. But the special effects were ... ...There is also plenty of action and character interaction besides shooting and beating and using special powers. As each mutant character is given a past (to give him a motivation) and a weakness, the film's plot never got boring because I also wanted to know how things developed between the mutants themselves. ...
Advantages: good effects Disadvantages: weak storyline
I am sorry but in my opinion with a great license like the Xmen and great stars like Patrick Stewart (Star Trek TNG) and Ian McKellen the producers of this film could have done a lot more.
Dont get me wrong, the film is ok. It has great special effects but the storyline is practically non existant. It trys to cover to many individual character story-lines and not enough on the films plot. Patrick Stewart is very good as prof X but in my opinion ...
Advantages: Well made Disadvantages: Not close neough to the comic book
X-men not just a comic book come alive. When I went to this movie I was not expecting much. Too many similar movies have disappointed just look at the Batman anthology and how it has killed the very essence of what it set out to do. I must however commend the makers of this film in every way the selection of a little known cast was crucial no big stars (such as heaven forbid a Friends member) can steal the spot light. But perhaps the most inspirational ... ...related movies APT PUPIL and THE USUAL SUSPECTS. A gamble to chose such man for essentially an action movie has paid off as the plot segments are almost better than the action and the entire film is well scripted and the plot develops cleverly. For once I cannot wait for the sequel ...
Advantages: Well filmed, good script, enjoyable to watch Disadvantages: I couldn't take my daughter- who would love it
I never read the comic books, although I used to go out with a fan, so I had a small idea of who was who.
I thoroughly enjoyed learning the history of each of the characters, and following their initial battles against prejudice from both the undeveloped humans, and even from each other. I think that they have set a good scene for film 2, which I understand all the cast are pre-signed up for. It carries good parallels for how humanity deals with ... ...effects were really good, although I think The Matrix still has the edge on this market. However, the exploration of the characters- how much pain Wolverine feels with those amazingly done claws, added a poignant angle, and a new facet to what could have been an old fashioned story of superheroes and action. ...
Advantages: Good plot with brilliant effects Disadvantages: Average humour
...is the first of many X-men films. It was above all a good introduction. the special effects for the combat scenes were very impressive and the characters were excellent, my favourite was Wolverine although Magneto is the most powerful. The attempts at humour however I felt were not that effective. This first film has made an interesting story and I can’t wait for the next one! Rouge was the most amazing character overall ...
I dragged my boyfriend to see X Men with the promise that I would watch the football if he came. He hates sci fi (but then I hate football), but by the end of the evenign he had to admit that he had thoroughly enjoyed himself. X Men is a laugh. It doesnt take itself too seriously and neither should the viewer. I found myself screeching with laughter on many an occasion. Its based on the Marvel comic and consequently is based around a preposterous ...
...a summer of poor block-busters X-men is worth a look.
It does feel like the first installment of a franchise and the setpieces are not amazingly memorable, but Dougray Scott must be kicking MI-2 for stopping him being Wolverine. Hugh Jackman plays Russell Crowe doing Mel Gibson and has the best lines (ie slags off Cyclops) and is spitting image of Gaz Coombes (Total Film is right about Sabretooth/Lemmy as well).
This film wipes away the bad memories ...
Advantages: action packed / stays within its limits Disadvantages: thin plot / narrative
Just back from the x-men tonight and can honestly say that it was enjoyable. As always I must rate the film on 2 levels
1. Does it acheive what it set out to acheive - Yes. I does match the hollywood hype surrounding it. The X men have found a solid portrayal through the eyes of director Brian Singer. He firmly establishes the story beyhind the mutation of the x-men in a scientific light which keeps from the film being too far-fetched(although one ... ...action is fantastic yet remarkably ( and not the directors fault) the only thing that suffers is the relativaly thin plot which I think is more of a foundation for up and coming sequels. 2. Did I enjoy it ? - yes I did. Not a real sci-fi fan in any respect i did not find myself at a loss with the technological garbble which some productions seem to churn out.
Suitable for all. ...
Advantages: GOOD ACTING / BELIEVABLE PLOT Disadvantages: DOES NOT GRAB YOU / A LITTLE SLOW IN PLACES
I’m not a X-Men fanatic but I do know a little about the stories and characters. I just found the film “A Little Disappointing”. I was looking the WOW factor from this film but it did not materialise, and I’m not just talking about special effects. It was too understated in my opinion, but I’m sure others would find this a bonus. On the plus side Bryan Singer’s direction was excellent, not like the comical versions of Batman we’ve had to endure in ... ...feat in itself in a fantasy film. The other major plus was the acting and of major characters, Patrick Stewart (Xavier) the wheel bound boss of the mutants, and Ian McKellen (Magneto) the baddie mutant with the ability to move metal at will. But I’m sure everyone will agree to star of film was Hugh Jackman (Logan/Wolverine), who cannot remember his past but they know he was experimented on and he now has an internal metal skeleton. I’m looking forward ...
Advantages: great fun for all Disadvantages: liberties taken with characters
I went to see this movie with much interest and anticipation, and with good reason. As an avid long time comic collector with over 12 years of Marvel/DC continuity floating around in my head, I was keen to see how loyal this movie would be to the comics history which spawned it. However, when I left the reassuring safety of the theatre's darkness and walked into the dazzling lights of the cinema lobby, I was in two minds. On one hand, I had loved ... ...the other hand I had some major gripes.
Yes, as expected the films effects were great (mystique being a standout, and of course Wolverine's claws!); the plot was a valiant attempt to condense decades worth of comics continuity; and some of the performances were superb, namely the always excellent Patrick Stewart, and Hugh Jackson (Wolverine). However, the film makers have taken certain liberties with principal comic characters. For example, the ...
Your reaction to the X-men movie is going to depend on whether you are a fan of the comics on which it is based. The movie sadly ignores many of the existing plot lines and cuts out a huge number of characters. It is irritating to find that Bobby (Iceman) who is one of the founding members of the X-men is now a young student at Dr. Xavier's school. It is irritating to see the complex love/hate relationship between Rogue and Magneto in the comics ...
