X men x actly x ellent entertainment

Advantages: great sound, good cast, fair storie, great effects
Disadvantages: none really

Now I do something which some of my friends think is fairly risky. What's that I hear you say? Do I argue with my wife when she's near the cutlery drawer on those particular days of the month when her hormones make her.......let's think.........less rational than usual......no. Do I mix drinking red wine with Jack Daniels.................no. Do I filter between lines of traffic on my motorbike and rattle the door mirrors of cars with my elbows? ...
...my friends think is risky is that I sometimes buy films without having seen them in the cinema. This risk factor has just increased as now I own a cracking DVD player (see my op on the Pioneer NS DV 55), I now pay out more for my risky pleasure (enough about Amsterdam though, back to the film). The last film I bought without having seen it in the cinema was "X-men", directed by Bryan Singer and starring Patrick Stewart,(Star Trek Next Gen), Famke ...

...late than never. X-Men is the live-action version of the bizarre mutant anti-heroes of the Stan Lee comic strip, directed by Bryan Singer, and it is preposterous and sinister and enjoyable. X-Men are the mutants of our planet earth in the not-too-distant future, an oppressed and harassed minority which a reactionary political establishment wishes to register and marginalise out of existence. The X-Men have got this way, not through the time-honoured ...
...She does not have an X-Men name. Perhaps she is weighing up a provisional shortlist. Ranged against Prof Xavier's enlightened posse are the radical wing led by Magneto - sometimes wearing a snugly-fitting helmet, sometimes not - played by the superb Ian McKellen. They are, if you will, Real X-Men or Continuity X-Men, who believe that any peace process with humans is futile. Ordinary human folk, those vanilla mammals, will only ever want to destroy ...

...famour marvel comics that put X-Men on the map. Yet, off i trudged with my mates to the cinema - and i wasn't dissapointed. The film made very little reference of importance to the comic book, meaning i could easily understand what was going on in the film. The action was endless, the effects dazzling, there was even the odd comical reference which stirred up the odd laugh. all in all the film was tremendous, a little weird at first what with metal ...

All hype

Advantages: A few good effects

...when i went to see x-men or i'd have been very disappointed, it's so all hyped up, if you've seen the trailer to the film you've seen the best bits virtually. The story is so boring and long winded it makes watching tiresome. It's one of those films with stupid flaws you can spot too. For example there's a scene where the good x-men are shackled against a wall with metal girders, you can blatantly seem them as rubber painted as metal as they wobble ...

X Men - Finally a summer blockbuster worth watching

Advantages: Enjoyable plot, good relatively unknown cast, well directed
Disadvantages: Occasionally ropey effects, inconsistencies with comics, possibly too blatantly set up for a sequel

Okay, now this is a film which I have been looking forward to ever since I heard about its conception. I tried my hardest not to get caught up in all the hype in case it turned into an incredible disapointment like so many films previously have, most recently for example, MI:2. However, being a fan (not an avid collector, but someone with a reasonable knowledge and a penchant for Marvel cartoons/comics) of the X Men, I had reasonably high expectations ...
...to be over a little too quickly, mainly due to the recent onslaught of 3 hour epics (90 minutes used to be considered a normal length!). The characterisation was a little loose other than that of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Rogue (Anna Paquin) but this opens up a whole new realm to explore in the inevitable sequel(s). Ray Park (Phantom Menace's Darth Maul) also puts in a good turn as the evil henchman toad, however this brings me to my main problem ...

Advantages: Slick, funny, visually stunning.
Disadvantages: Not long enough, a tad overwhelming perhaps.

...The surprise here is that X-Men is actually good. Really good. First of all let me say that I'm not a fan of X-Men. In fact before the film came along I can honestly say that I'd never heard of it, let alone knew anything about it. Therefore I was interested to see how the film would work for someone who had no previous knowledge. So what's it about? Well, the basic premise is that in the "not too distant future", mutants with superhuman or supernatural ...
...The region 1 DVD of X-Men is available now and the good news is that it's a great disc and can stand proud alongside the other premium DVDs from FoxVideo - Fight Club, The Abyss, ID4 etc.. Is it me or do Fox DVDs seem to have a picture quality superior to that of other studios? The sound too is impressive - rich, bassy and making full use of the surround channels. The best news though is the special features, 10 minutes of deleted footage, the usual ...

Great Comic Great Characters Great Film

Advantages: Ver y James Marsden
Disadvantages: None

X-men is a film by 20th century fox. The film is based on the popular marvel comic by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The comic was first produced in September 1963 and has been a huge hit since then. The comic is about a team of super heroes that are mutants. Charles Xavier is the professor and teaches the mutants how to use their mutant powers to make a world where mutants and humans can live together in peace. Not everyone shares this view and Magneto ...
...so that mutants can live in peace. The film follows the story of these mutants and their fight to fit in to society and to stop magneto from wiping out mankind. Charles Xavier is played by Patrick Stewart (Star Trek, Conspiracy Theory) and is the perfect person as not only does he look like the professor from the comics and the cartoons (the bald head) but also he’s such a good actor. Xavier has amazing telepathic powers and mind control. ...

...fairly faithful adaptation of the X-Men comic strip which has been immensely popular in the USA for years. It suffers only a little for the ever present Americanisms, dated comic book imagery (Check out Magneto’s helmet!) and continuous moralising so popular in recent Hollywood offerings. It is one hour and forty minutes long and rated with a 12 Certificate. The film is reviewed elsewhere but it has many of the qualities found in the Matrix, ...
...throughout and is a beautiful visual-effects laden spectacle of a film. The DVD shows the film in a sharp, anamorphic widescreen presentation in the original 2.35:1 ratio. It looks good, though a lot of the film relies on dark imagery and shadows, so the benefits of the high resolution are sometimes missed. The sound is only available in a DD5.1 surround sound format which is fabulous, but it was a little disappointing to find no DTS option had ...

Great Adaption!

Advantages: Good adaption, but with sensible changes made for the big screen.
Disadvantages: Poor soundtrack, Storm underused.

Like many fans of the comic-book series, I was looking forward to seeing this. However, like these fans, I was well aware that many mistakes could have been made in the translation to the big screen. Luckily, there were not many. The two characters I was most pleased with were Charles Xavier and Magneto. Very good performances from both and they remembered that not every villain has to be one-dimensional. Magneto's motives were well-outlined, where ...
...that history will be repeated with mutants as scapegoats. Quite different from "Batman and Robin" where a failed experiment makes Arnold Schwarzenegger believe that every other line should be an ice-related pun. I should add that putting the characters in black, rather than the standard blue and gold was a very welcome idea. Also, it was a fantastic idea giving other mutants cameo appearences. I definitely saw Iceman and Shadowcat and I wonder ...

When I was dragged off on a Moday evening with a friend to see the X-men, I was not best pleased. The name instantly called up images of boring cartoons, the kind they show on saturday morning tv for the kids. However I was pleasantly surprised. Firstly, it was not animated. Seconly it was not packed out with small children and parents, making the most of the summer holidays, so I was not sluped in my seat in shame for even being there. Wht I actually ...

They are up against a group of evil mutants led by Magneto (Ian Mckellen) who think the only way for mutants to prosper is by force. Overall this is a very good film and I would recommend it to anyone who likes action or sci-fi. ...
