X is for Xcellent

Advantages: good cast, good story, great effect make the super powers almost believeable
Disadvantages: a bit slow at times early on

Having read the X-Men comic as a kid, I was reasonably excited to see what the film adaptation would be like. The film had definitely been hyped as a big ‘Summer blockbuster’ and as such would either be a big flop or an exciting piece of real escapism. Firstly, sit yourself down in the right frame of mind to watch this movie. Think of it as Superman, Batman – you must therefore suspend certain rules of reality. Then, remember the ...
...Quite obviously there is another X-Men movie in the wings for future launch. The plot of this movie revolves around the ‘anti-mutant’ sentiment that is evident in members of the U.S. Congress and that is gaining popularity among the people. Sir Ian McKellan plays ‘Magneto' - a mutant who faced war-time persecution as a child and who intends to wage a war against the humans to protect the race of mutants. Patrick Stewart plays ‘Professor ...

Kirk is way better than Picard...

Advantages: Some attractive actors, seeing a comic come alive, one or two nice special effects.
Disadvantages: Very average plot and script, numerous plot holes, changes to the original X-Men, disappointing effects.

...up to date comes the X-Men movie, the big-screen adaptation of the popular comic book series. I have one friend in particular who is big on comics. He can reel of a long list of obscure names and references even after ten pints. He knows the entire family tree of Spiderman and his many relatives. And he's even got a thing for comic book ladies now. So, I was hoping he'd be a good person to watch X-Men with. I was not disappointed. Watching films ...
...like watching something with friends. X-Men is a great film for this - it never takes itself all too seriously, and fans of the comic will have a field day spotting the references and pointing out the plot flaws. The plot of the film is, to be precise, wholly unremarkable, and I would struggle to stretch out a hundred words to cover it. But then, I suspect a deep and meaningful plot was never top of the writer's list - trying to explain a long-running ...

...get off the ground. The X-Men are lucky in that most of their powers don't require too much expensive CGI work to pull off, but their inherent themes of paranoia and racial injustice added with enough back-story to fill seventy episodes of Eastenders more than make up for it. Beyond the great comic storyline though, why should we expect a decent superhero movie based on the genres history? So, no one is more surprised than I am that the movie actually ...
...Singer (Director of The Usual Suspects) and a crew of credited and uncredited screenwriters overcame every obstacle in their way. "X-Men" should be the blueprint for all super-hero films to come. Job #1 is setting up the world. From the opening we learn that human evolution is lurching forward. People born with significant genetic differences (blue skin, wings, whatever) are called mutants. In the not too distant future, normal humans such as Senator ...

Only a B plus for the X Men

Advantages: Good special effects, good extras
Disadvantages: Not too much of a plot, some player incompatibility

With some heavyweight Shakespearean actors on board ( Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellern ), some good looking actresses ( Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, Rebbeca Romijn Stanos ) a couple of relative unknowns ( Ray Park, Hugh Jackman ) some special effects, an ace director ( Bryan Singer ), a not inconsiderable budget of about $75 million dollars and you would think this should serve up an absolutely cracking film. Well, sort of is the unfortunate answer. ...

It lays the foundation of the no doubt many sequels to come and tells the story of how two mutants with strange powers come to the notice of the bosses of two rival mutant factions. The good guys and the bad guys. The good guys are led by Professor Xavier ( Stewart ) who is a telepath. In his happy band are Cyclops ( who shoots power beams from his eyes ) Storm ( Berry ) who can control the ...

...excellent film by Bryan Singer. X-Men has now been released on DVD, with a whole host of extra features to go with it. I will begin by saying a bit about the film itself. Born into a world of prejudice are children whose bodies have undergone genetic mutations, leaving them with extraordinary and potentially dangerous powers. Under the guidance of Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), these mutants can learn to control their powers and use ...
...of anybody she touches. The X-Men must now protect the humans that fear them as the evil Magneto (Ian McKellen) tries to wipeout major world figures, to prove to the world that mutants and humans can never co-exist. The film itself is an excellent example of a brilliant film. Another example of a comic book story come to life, this time actually being a generally good film. The acting by stars such as Stewart and McKellen are excellent, but the ...

...Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and his X-Men trying to stop him. There are very real themes of racism and tolerance throughout this movie... Xavier believes in peaceful coexistence. Magneto, tainted by the Holocaust, believes in domination because, as we see in the film, mankind is near the point of trying to kill them anyway. And thrown into the middle is a new mutant Rogue (Anna Paquin) and the mysterious and abrasive loner Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). ...
...is less enthused, mocking the X-Men and Xavier and never buying into the dream of peaceful coexistence. The cast is what really makes this movie come alive for me. Singer never allows his actors to play their parts any other way but dead serious and it lends so much more credibility to the film. Too many times superhero films are filled with big name talent that doesn't believe in the serious nature of the comic books. Gene Hackman made Lex Luthor ...

...version of the alternative superhero X-Men universe created for Marvel Comics by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and others. It's a rare comic-book movie that doesn't fall over its cape introducing all the characters, and this is the exception. X-Men drops us into a world that is closer to our own than Batman's Gotham City, but it's still home to super-powered goodies and baddies. Opening in high seriousness with paranormal activity in a WW2 concentration camp ...
...Singer's film sets up a complex background with economy and establishes vivid, strange characters well before we get to the fun. There's Halle Berry flying and summoning snowstorms, James Marsden zapping people with his "optic beams", Rebecca Romijn-Stamos shape-shifting her blue naked form, and Ray Park lashing out with his Toad-tongue. The big conflict is between Patrick Stewart's Professor X and Ian McKellen's Magneto, super-powerful mutants who ...

Hey, Bub.

Advantages: Good effects, good extras.
Disadvantages: Story moves slow, not much actually happens.

At long last my X-Men DVD finally arrived through the post from America and on first impression I have to say it is very, very nice but I'll talk more about the actual disk later. As most comic fans will know the film was quite an accurate conversion of the comic with only a few changes to make it easy to follow and fit into the hour and a half it lasts. The film opens with a flashy Fight Club style opening before moving to Poland 1944 where we see ...
...in the Headquarter of the X-Men which also doubles as a school for young mutants. Its here that Magneto explains what is going on to Wolverine and what Magneto really wants. The packaging of the disk is very stylish, with it coming in a similar cardboard case as another 20th century Fox release Fight Club, but having the same shiny effect as the region 1 release of Final Destination. The pull out that holds the disk is of the same structure and has ...

It feels a bit empty in places, the fight between Wolverine and Mystique is great but over so quickly you want more. However the fight between Toad and Storm more than makes up for it. Magneto wants to harness Rogues absorbing powers for his own means and the X-Men want to take them both in to the fold. Patrick Stewart was the only choice for the bald-headed telepath and McKellan is brilliant as Magneto. The mutants have evolved...

Advantages: Thought-provoking, good characterisations and acting
Disadvantages: None

X-men is about mutants, which we are told that have evolved from teenagers with high hormones. Whatever humans may think, they are really just ordinary people with cool, yet terrifying powers, which are different for every mutant. Like humans, there are bad and good ones, but naturally the government (who do have some knowledge on the new species) is fearful of them because of the chaos they could cause with their powers if they choose to do so. ...
...Everything about the characters in X-Men is just fantastic. They only have to be on screen for a couple of moments and through the flawless script and superb acting, an awful lot is revealed about their character. Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamds), one of Magneto’s sidekicks, is my personal favourite. She is a shape-shifter and very devious and vicious. She’s also the one with the cool computer generated blue body, as featured on the video ...

Black leather and intensity

Advantages: Totally gripping - Jackman marvellous as Wolverine
Disadvantages: If you've read the comics, you'll come with some preconceptions

What price Hugh Jackman as the new Clint Eastwood? "Brooding" and "intense" are two of the words which spring most readily to the mind when you see him, all outlaw tension, black leather and huge steel claws, as Wolverine in Brian Singer's reading of the Marvel Comics legends, X Men. It's a shadowy and dark film as a whole, but there's none as shadowy or dark as Jackman's fierce loner. He gets most of the best lines here, too. He has a hate-hate ...
...the hots for Jean Grey. After Wolverine polishes off Evil Mutant chameleon Mystique, who has been impersonating him, Cyclops wants to be sure that the real Wolverine has survived. "How do we know you're the real Wolverine" he challenges. Jackman has the evidence: "You're a dick." (Gales of laughter around the cinema) That's a rare moment of light and humour in this epic and most of the time is spent painting a thinly disguised analogy for racism ...
