...For the part of Willy Wonka the author Dahl wanted to use Spike Millighan, but this idea was squashed as the Americans vetoed him. Other names went into the hat including Ron Moody (remember him he played Fagan in Oliver) but he declined the part, then in walked Gene Wilder and Mel Stuart had found the man for the part.
After searching the globe to find a suitable location to film on and build the chocolate factory they settled on Bavaria film studios ... ...chocolate. Also we have Willy Wonka who is looking for a child with integrity and honesty.
As the credits start rolling we see close-ups of chocolate being manufactured and then move onto the school children running into the local sweetshop after school to buy chocolate, this also leads us into the first song of the show.
The cameras then move on and introduce us to Charlie Buckett as he does his paper round to bring in some extra money to help ...

By the time Willy Wonka and his Chocolate Factory was released to cinema audiences in 1971 I was already an adult. Well I was 19 and thought I was. However I still really enjoyed this film and thought I would give it another viewing when it was on television
this weekend. Sure it is a little dated these days but it still has a magic charm.

Each child is taken aside and whispered to by a weird looking man looking to get the secret ingreidents of the Everlasting Gobstopper.
He goes to the factory with is Grandpa who hasn't been out of bed ... ...factory by Mr Wonka.
Willy Wonka is played by Gene Wilder. Roy Kinnear makes a guest appearance and the rest of the cast are all American. Not sure where it is set as it looks foreign with foreign car number plates.

I brought this dvd for niece as she was staying over the night. I remember both the book and film as a child so was probably more excited than she was. I kicked my boyfriend out for the night and sat down with popcorn and sweets ready for the movie. We were not let down, I remember the wow factor I had as a kid and as a grown woman it was exactly the same. We all know that a lot the time a film does not do the book justice, but inb this case it fully ... ...his father) is the perfect child, working his paperround to buy his bed ridden Grandad Joes tobacco. Whilst all the other local children are glutoness and spoiled he does not moan but just helps his mum whenever he can.
Charlie wins one of five golden tickets to have a visit around the chocolate factory and a lifetime supply of chocolate. As the children go around each slowly dissapears with a moral to why. The Umpa Lumpas sing songs to teach lessons ...

What a film!
Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory is a tale of joy, hope, despair and ultimately reward. from the moment you see how Charlie Bucket and his family live in poverty you hope that something great will happen for them.
Wen Charlie finds the golden ticket in the chocolate bar it feels like you to have won! You feel his joy as he begins his journey to the amazing, magical chocolate factory.
This book and film changed a small part of ... ...that had big iron gates and smoke bellowing from the chimneys. I walked passed the brewery every morning and, due to the time of morning, I would never see anyone go in or anyone come out. at such an early age I was convinced it was the chocolate factory and even tried to scale the walls on one occasion! such was the power of the film.
From the moment you meet Mr Wonka and enter the delightful factory you are transfixed as if nothing matters anymore. ...
