Primarily the story of the love that grew between country stars Johnny Cash and June Carter during the early years of Cash's career, WALK THE LINE is the result of intense...
more...collaboration between director James Mangold, co-writer Gill Dennis, Johnny Cash, and June Carter Cash. Though both Cashes died in 2003, they oversaw the script's development for seven years. Mangold and Cash's insistence that the film's stars would actually sing paid off. Witherspoon's singing (as June) is lovely, and Phoenix's contains the raw energy and soul that defined Cash's sound. Even as a child on a cotton farm in Depression-era Arkansas, Cash shows a strong interest in music, escaping from his no-frills life and strict father (Robert Patrick) through hymns and listening to the radio. When his brother dies in a freak accident, young Johnny feels responsible, and worries that he will never live up to his brother's goodness. The film follows Cash through his first marriage with Vivian Cash (Ginnifer Goodwin) and into the early stages of his touring career alongside such musicians as Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, and most importantly, June Carter. As Cash's success grows, so does his relationship with drugs, alcohol, and Carter, putting a strain upon his family life. From his initial audition with Sam Phillips of Sun Records on through his legendary 1968 concert at Folsom Prison, Cash is transformed from a hesitant singer riddled with demons to a man whose uniquely bold style would make music history. WALK THE LINE never attempts to paint a full picture of Cash's prolific career, but instead focuses on the passions that drove his music and on the woman who gave him strength. With magical performances by Witherspoon and Phoenix, a haunting and inspiring American romance is brought beautifully to life.

Walk the Line said the Man in Black
Review of Walk The Line DVD by christianfilmcritic

Advantages: An engaging, touching story and exceptional performances
Disadvantages: Very little

"Walk the Line" chronicles the early years of legendary Country singer Johnny Cash from his childhood days, through to his rise to fame as a singer, his romance with June Carter, his decline into drug addiction and culminating in the now legendary concert at Folsom Prison in 1968. There is nothing I enjoy more than a really good biopic, one which entertains, educates and excites you whenever you watch it. For me "Walk the Line" fits that scenario ... Read review

Walk this Way
Review of Walk The Line DVD by afy9mab

Advantages: Great performances, good direction and a strong script
Disadvantages: Subtitled epilogue

Johnny Cash, the iconic Man in Black of Country music found a wellspring of inspiration in a life characterised by a self-destructive streak that saw him addicted to booze and prescription drugs. His life was further complicated by an upbringing marred by a controlling and abusive father and lifelong guilt over the childhood death of his older brother. He found redemption in his pursuit and romance with fellow singer June Carter, but their relationship ... Read review

Where was the boy named Sue?!?!?
Review of Walk The Line DVD by CaptainDisaster

Advantages: Phoenix, Witherspoon, most things about the movie...
Disadvantages: ... I think it just needed to lighten up a little from time to time

...weren't many special effects - Walk the Line is a completely character-driven movie and works well as such. The camerawork is clever in places and the sets were well designed. In fact there's very little I could possibly say against this movie as such, but I just felt quite distant from the main characters and thus never quite got involved with what was going on. Also, though I quite like the music in the movie, none of it grabbed me. Somehow I feel ... Read review

Here Comes The Man In Black
Review of Walk The Line DVD by utero

Advantages: Great music and performances
Disadvantages: Always tough to cram years of life into two hours

...omitted from the film but Walk The Line makes a wise decision and mainly concentrates on the rise of Cash. By keeping things simple and concentrating on the music, Walk The Line becomes a very accessible drama for any audience. You don't have to be a fan of Cash or the music to leave the theatre satisfied. James Mangold does a very solid job of directing the film; he gets the right performances out of his actors and most importantly makes sure ... Read review

The Man in Black
Review of Walk The Line DVD by simond25

Advantages: Great story, amazing music and real life performances
Disadvantages: none

...you with absolute confidence that Walk the Line is as good as the critics say. I would give this film 6 stars if I could. The story: The film begins with Cash as a young boy growing up with his older brother. Early on tragedy strikes when Jack is mortally injured in a sawmill accident and the only thing his father has to say to his younger son is an accusatory, "Where were you?" Cash then joins the air force straight out of high school happy ... Read review

The tale of Johnny Cash
Review of Walk The Line DVD by sunmeilan

Advantages: Great acting
Disadvantages: Not particularly exciting

...this has been proved in Walk the Line. As June, she plays the attention-seeking tart with a heart to absolute perfection. Her tenderness towards Johnny when he is suffering is truly touching. I'm so pleased that finally she has had a role that she can truly get her teeth into. Joaquin Pheonix as Johnny Cash is also pretty good. I haven't seen any films that I can think of that have starred Joaquin Pheonix before, so I didn't have a prior opinion ... Read review

Well you wonder why I always dress in black...
Review of Walk The Line DVD by octavio.teixeira

Advantages: Great movie, great story, great cast.
Disadvantages: Haven't found one...

"Hello, I'm Johnny Cash…" is how Cash started his concert at Folsom's High Security prison in 1968 and it's also how this movie starts. A roaring audience of criminals awaits the singer entrance. Joaquin Phoenix is in the backstage, dressed in black, with a guitar on his back… This is the start of a story about a little boy with a hard life of poverty, hit by the premature death of his brother and by his father's aloofness. His first years quickly ... Read review

The Darker Acceptable Face of Country & Western
Review of Walk The Line DVD by bigush

Advantages: Good biopic of a music legend
Disadvantages: Phoenix just gets away with it

I'm the kind of guy who cut my teeth and, often parts of my head, to Led Zeppelin and the Rolling stones. So, as a youth, the idea of listening to the music of a blonde with big hair and spangled boots, or anyone wearing a Stetson was somewhat nauseating. In my nerdish hirsute naivety I had no idea of the debt that all types of modern music owed to Country and Western, and its influence on Rock and Roll in particular. I came to my senses , and about ... Read review

Johnny Cash - Walk the Line
Review of Walk The Line DVD by NewYork2006

Advantages: Heartwarming, compelling, fantastic soundtrack
Disadvantages: If you hate country music then it's not for you!

I always loved listening to Johnny Cash when I was growing up. I loved his music from an early age when my Stepdad would have his cd's playing in his study and I would listen through the door! So when I heard they were making a film about him I was thrilled. As much as I loved his music I hadn't taken the time to read about his life etc as I has with others singers I liked. I thought this would be a great insight into his life. For those of ... Read review

Walk the Line - Johnny Cash
Review of Walk The Line DVD by Spottydog11

Advantages: Great, oscar winning movie, great singing!
Disadvantages: None

This was a really great movie and one you should definitely see. It is about the life of Johnny Cash, the famed American country singer. Johnny Cash is played by Joaquin Phoenix and June Carter (his eventual wife) is played by Reece Witherspoon. I did not know anything about Johnny Cash before I saw this and even if you aren't a fan of his music that will not put you off the film. It chronicals his early life as a child (briefly) before he became ... Read review

Advantages: mix of genres, includes Cash's music, suitable for whole family
Disadvantages: Quite long-but not really, not great special features

In one word? Fantastic, mind-blowing, best film ever made! Ok a few words over, but I had to say that, because if you are considering this film, consider no more! Watch it! I promise you will never forget it. Ok I will quickly sum up the film, then talk a bit about other aspects SUMMARY: The film takes place in the era of the Great Depression in America. Joaquin Phoenix plays Johnny Cash, a music legend. As a young boy, his brother Jack dies in ... Read review
