Advantages: Acting, special effects Disadvantages: Far too dark, makes it hard to see anything
...many ways, it is. The Underworld saga has enjoyed a couple of enjoyable films, which have served to cinematise in quite a glossy and violent way the fantasy world of vampires and werewolves.
However, this prequel is very dark, in more ways than one. Set in medieval times, and with Kate Beckinsale seemingly nowhere in sight, we see the history behind the struggle between the vampires and the werewolves. Lycan Lucian (Michael Sheen) has something ... ...own right, without worrying about Underworld 1 and 2. However, the cast members for some of the main characters are those who have been in it since the first, and many characters are in all films, meaning that it also makes sense as part of the series. I wouldn't say that it's essential or even necessary as part of the sequel, and doesn't really cover ground that hasn't at least been explained in the previous films.

Advantages: Great story, lots of questions answered and good special effects Disadvantages: None that I can think of!
Underworld - Rise Of The Lycans is the missing piece to the fabulous story of the Death Dealers and Lycans. When the first movie came out, Underworld, it raised many unanswered questions but brought an epic and spectacular story into our midst. Underworld Evolution is the second film and carrys straight on after the first. It does answer more of our questions and digs the story a little bit further. However, Underworld - Rise Of The Lycans goes back, ... ...watching this film, you're sorted.
Underworld - Rise Of The Lycans shows you what happened before the first two movies, before there were guns and explosives involved. It shows you where characters come from, and where relationships were formed. This is all helpful to understand the first two movies a lot clearer.
