...seem a blockbuster type movie but the way its done here is superb. It involves initially 2 submarines which after a battle become one and then it is chased all over the ocean by both sides! The special effects really are quite special and the filming is done incredibly well. The acting from the likes of Mathew McConaughey, Bill Paxton and Harvey Keitel is just marvellous to see. I have to admit, I only watched this movie because I am a big fan of Jon Bon Jovi and probably wouldn't have bothered otherwise. I was pleasantly surprised to thoroughly enjoy it and in fact have bought the DVD and seen it several times over. The basic plot is the American navy disguise themselves in a German U-boat in order to capture the Enigma machine. The film has caused some controversy as the British Navy were in fact the first to capture ...
...the storyline is fictional. I felt it started off a little slowly, showing the crew at a dance and preparing to sail but after that, it was suspense and action all the way, although I got a little confused in places as to which U-boat was which during the fight scenes. You can identify with the fear of the young submariners as they sit tight in their rickety, leaking submarine with depth charges going off all around them when the German destroyer ...

The story starts in the spring of 1942 where a German submarine is partially destroyed by a British destroyer. However the submarine sends an S.O.S to Germany for help. I couldn't really tell you what it is about, because i didnt understand it, till it was explained to me afterwards!! I have to say that before I start ranting, I have nothing against Hollywood in general. I have even found the recent Anti-English history twisting rather amusing. But when Hollywood has to bare faced audacity to create a film that completely re-writes a British war story with America as the heroes, I get mad. I know that the film is supposed to be fictional. I HATE THIS FILM!!! I hate this film because - It is factually not just wrong, but ignorantly blaise about who it is upsetting and undermining. I will never accept - "But it is a good movie" as a reason why this film should be torn up and burn unceromoniusly" It would have been perfectly possible to write this film and be right on the basic facts The USA did not crack the Enigma code it was a joint effort between the Polish and the English. ...
...to help the end of WWII - they did have precious little involvement in this part of it. The film is perfectly good as a war film, but there are so many war films you are best off ignoring this and watching - The Longest Day or The Trench. Just not this. I appreciate that you want a review of this film, but films based on fantasy should not undermine the actuality of the real situation and so however good the acting in the film is - and it is OK ...

This film is excellent. When going to see this do not expect an historically correct account of the u-boat war. But that is not the point of the film. The point is that it is a fun movie. It has tension, comic relief and action. It is not realistic but that adds to the flava of it all. Even history freaks will enjoy this. The film itself is very good, with a strong story line and some interesting twists and turns along the way, but after the spate of films which were far more factually based - such as Saving Private Ryan then I felt it fell down quite a bit. Normally I am suspicious of anything that features a Rock Star acting as most of the time it isnt a pretty sight but Bon Jovi and indeed the whole cast (esp Harvey) put on a thoroughly good show and an interesting tale it is too! However U-571 has many weaknesses, despite excellent acting from the cast (ignoring Jon Bon Jovi who thankfully makes a quick exit from the movie) the characters are cardboard cut-outs with only Matthew McMonaughey's character displaying any depth. You can easily predict the major plot developments and within the first five minutes it is clear who is going to die during the movie. The special effects are ok, but they are not spectacular ...

When I heard about this movie "U-571", I immediately thought of the foreign film "Das Boot" ("The Boat") from 1986 (I believe), which were nominated for 6 Academy Awards. Trust me: "Das Boot" is a much much better movie, and more involved, and moves faster, well made (much better made), and more realistic, and keeps you on the edge of the seat. "Das Boot" is excellent, as when compared to the inferior "U-571". And "Das Boot" IS the BEST submarine ...
...are there, inside the submarine. "U-571" feels like a typical, Hollywood movie: fictionalized, and a "by the numbers" movie. It never made me feel tense, made me feel bored. It did not do anything for me. For someone who did not see the film "Das Boot", sure, "U-571" might seem good and exciting, but for me, just the opposite. If you have to pick, watch "Das Boot". If you can get over the fact that it wasn't really the yanks who acually captured the enigma but the brittish , they do aknowledge this on the end credits, (big deal)This is rather a good film, if you try and not think you are watching hunt for red october.It reminds me of "das boat"ther was a film worth watching.the action scenes are great there are times when you begin to feel really clostraphobic at times ,unfortunatly that sort of interreaction ...
