U-571 (DVD)

...As it happens U-571 is a decent film. As I've mentioned a US navy crew capture the enigma machine from the nazis but then find themselves in enemy waters , in a german submarine and in very hot water. The film manages to crete some good action scenes considering they are in a large tin can but the real highlights are when depth charges are being dropped all around the sub. There's also a great scene where an in-crew argument erupts on wether or not ...
...The acting is quite good although the script does a have a few dialogue clangers. But with someone like Harvey Keitel holding things together you can expect something decent, don't let the fact that Jon Bon Jovi is in the film put you off, non-fans will get pleasure from where his character ends up ! U 571 Have only just watched this and although grossly inaccurate it was quite enjoyable. Synopsis: ~~~~~~~ The movie starts with U571 torpedoing ships but then it gets spotted by a destroyer which proceeds to drop depth charges on it. The German U boat gets damaged by the depth charges and with all of the engineers killed they send for help. However the Americans pick up the SOS and try to get their first. The beginning of this film was the most boring I have had to sit through in a while! Things improve somewhat towards the middle half of the film as the war-action scenes take off. As Matthew McConaughey overpowers the crew of the crippled German submarine. This film annoys me terribly. Since when did the yanks do all this on their own? They have simply taken a story of British victory and twisted it to glorify themselves (yet again). The British people are mentioned twice in the entire movie, once because we were referred to as the Brits and another time to say that the Yanks were going to dock in England. Stories that ebgin "based on a true story" tend not to be the most interesting films going. SO when I heard there was a film about the capturing of the Enigma machine I was wary. I need not have bothered. This bore all the resemblance to the story in that there was a war, a U-boat and an Enigma machine. The story has been altered to an extent it bears no resemblance to real lfe. So if you're looking for a historical fim this is really not it. Never ...
...the point of a farce be it the actual plot or the behaviour of the men of the armed forces but it is still thouroughly enjoyable. People go and watch movies with too much politics going on in their heads. Forget how much it cost to make, and it's historical accuracy. Is it a good movie? In this case, with U-571, the answer is yes. The story is undoubtedly gripping and unusual for a generation not raised on second world war movies, and the performances do hold together well. I think this film is very good for entertainment purposes. The actual storyline is good, it isn't too far fetched and the actors pull off a realistic portrayal of what life must have been like in a submarine like that. However it becomes a little too anecdotal at some stages, especially the death of one sailor in a particular scene, where he dies to save the crew.... Perhaps more could have been made of the significance of the Enigma machine, and ...

OK, if you haven't heard, U-571 is a film that has started a huge trans-atlantic argument as 'hollywood' had rewritten history, and spat on the graves of the two Royal Navy sailors who lost their lives rescueing the Enigma encoding machine, which is the basis of this film, just because American audiences like American heroes. What the film is based on The film is based on (The film isn't hissorically correct) when an american submarine captuers a damaged U-boat with the Prized ENIGMA machine on it (the ENIGMA was the german code machine) and then when their origional sub is torpedoed ,the 11 or so people alive on the captuered sub manage to destroy a re-supply sub and an attacking destroyer. What happens The film starts off at a party for the crew of the submarine ...
...has been cut short. The capitain returns to the dock and is asked to see the commedore with a seaman (werner) for reasons which are hard to guess.. so they get under way. They have with them an agent who is to lead a team of 12men to capture the U-boat. They succed and then when they are about to return to their origional boat the german re-supply boat turns up and blows it up. Now developes a cat and mouse game in which the german sub is blown up. ...

...such a film first ?, U-571 actually points out that it is indeed made up and actually honurs the real heroes at the end of the film. This film is nothing but gripping entertainmwnt and should be seen just as that. All the charcaters are great and there's a lot of tension captured in the confined enviroment of the sub. The film has a lot of action which is impressive considering the lack of location. it's best to see this in a state of the art theatre ...
...the depth charges shudder through you. When above water the film keeps it's head and serves up a tense scene involving an oncoming jet. The actors involved really sell the moment and really made me wanna see the movie. Don;t listen to all the boring english press-they probably haven't even seen it. Give it a go and you'll be surprised ! ...

The english, the french, the american, the german, what does it matter? Well, it obviously doesn't matter that much because this film seemed to have good reviews floating all around its sinking hull and it went down rather well with the cinema audiences. Shame really isn't it? Tyler undertakes a perilous mission to seize a German Enigma machine, and encounter many dangers along the way. For anyone who has seen any other submarine movie, however, U-571 quickly turns into a succession of genre clichés: there's the depth-charge dropping scene, ...
...all the way. Where U-571 scores highly is in its wealth of period detail: every cog and lever that operates the U-boat is dwelt upon lovingly. It looks and feels completely authentic.
