Advantages: The performances of the two leads and some excellent direction.
Disadvantages: An ending that betrays the early convictions of the film.

Whilst Training Day failed to make a significant impact at the UK Box Office, the acclaim induced by an Oscar winning performance by Denzel Washington ensured that it’s DVD sales have been much more impressive. At first sight, it would be easy to dismiss ‘Training Day’ as just another by the numbers US police movie – rookie officer working with the experienced narcotics cop, patrolling ‘the hood’ with the black and Hispanic gangs, the good cop/bad cop and black cop/white cop interaction routines, it’s all been seen and done before, right? Hey, ever seen the movie about the grizzled street-wise cop, partnered with the wet-behind-the-ears rookie? Yeh I thought as much, two dozen times at least. This is the film that won Denzel Washington his oscar, so I had to see if his acting was really good in it. He is always good in the parts he takes but this is the firts time he has been in a bad part. From the films I have seen him in he is usually the good guy but not here. ...I sat down to watch Training Day, looking forward to a barnstorming film about the mean streets of LA with some excellent performances. Well at least I got some good performances. The film was released in cinemas in late 2001 and lasts roughly 122 minutes. Disadvantages: Doesn't warrant too many repeated viewings, some of the characters and parts of the story seem caricature

I've not seen very many Denzel Washington films, but those I have featured him playing clean wholesome characters, the complete antithesis of the stereotypical black role, that of a more 'attitude' one whether good or bad. Here, Washington effectively plays the gangster in cop's clothing. Not only he does revel in it, he does it so well that you actual despise and fear his character. That is where the director plays a huge nice trick. He knows that Denzel is associated with the image of a good, brave and noble person.
