Antoine Fuqua (THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS, BAIT) turns up the intensity level with TRAINING DAY, a charged drama about police corruption in downtown Los Angeles. Ethan Hawke stars as...
more...Jake Hoyt, a well-intentioned young officer who thinks he's found his ticket to becoming a detective in the form of undercover officer Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington). Harris is a notorious figure in the streets and in the office. He also has the authority to make Jake's professional wishes come true, provided Jake is able to prove his worth on Alonzo's team. At first, Alonzo's blunt, carefree demeanour provides a shock to Jake's optimistic system, but as it becomes clear that Alonzo is dangerously out of control, Jake must decide whether or not to risk his future in the name of the law.
Washington's performance as the hardened, pragmatic detective is a sight to behold. He delivers his lines with a devilish ferocity that keeps the film bubbling throughout. Hawke slips into the role of the rookie everyman with ease, providing a good contrast to Washington's fiery presence. Former video director Fuqua completes the picture by casting musicians Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Macy Gray in supporting roles.

Advantages: gritty, realistic, powerhouse perfromances
Disadvantages: undernourished script`

Oscars, love them or hate them, it is a major annual event that can’t be ignored. In the leading months, Hollywood releases (usually) overlong, overblown, drama epics because they seem to think that that sort of thing wins buckets of awards. Hell, look at “Titanic”, one of the single biggest productions in film history. It’s the perfect love it/hate it film where not everyone was totally thrilled with the big budget portrayal ... WHO LEFT THE PLOT OUT
Review of Training Day DVD by LostWitness

Advantages: Denzel and Ethan
Disadvantages: The rest of it

...and gangster rap. The concept of Training Day is that the entire film’s events are set within a 24-hour period. This isn’t performed in a “race against the clock” way, but is the moody tale of a rookie cop, Jake and his first day’s work within the notorious L.A. narcotics division. Jake is partnered with long-time narcotics officer, Alonzo and finds his youthful ambition and good intentions in complete contrast to ... Read review

King Kong Ain't Got Sh*t On Me!
Review of Training Day DVD by Andy.mack

Advantages: Decent story, good perfromances, decent direction
Disadvantages: Has the inevitable lull that afflicts all Denzel films

...decided it had to be Training Day as I hadn't seen it for a while and Pip had never seen it. The film was originally released back in 2001 and was subject to quite a bit of hype and press attention. At the time I had wondered whether it was justified but as with most Denzel films I felt I couldn't go wrong either way. The film takes on a kind of 24 approach with the events in the movie taking place in one day. Of course this isn't a race against ... Read review

Advantages: Very good actors
Disadvantages: i didn't saw

-Update: Tuesday 1st. I would like to thanks Entwife, for her help!! Three weeks ago the weather was bad in the south-east of France (where i live) and so, with my wife we wanted to “test” a life size cinema, we’d never had the occasion to go to a movies-town. Arrived in front of the cinema we didn’t know what to choose!! A horror film…berk!! A funny film…..wasn’t looking very funny.. And suddenly I saw a poster with Denzel Washington… I ... Read review

Oscar Winning Performance in Disappointing DVD
Review of Training Day DVD by Mercury

Advantages: The performances of the two leads and some excellent direction.
Disadvantages: An ending that betrays the early convictions of the film.

Whilst Training Day failed to make a significant impact at the UK Box Office, the acclaim induced by an Oscar winning performance by Denzel Washington ensured that it’s DVD sales have been much more impressive. I figured that it was about time that I found out what all the fuss was about and recently acquired a copy for a very reasonable £12.97 from Tescos. The Film Training Day is a cop movie, although it is a far cry from the succession of ... Read review

Grey area
Review of Training Day DVD by JVL

Advantages: Excellent acting, tight plot, avoids cliches
Disadvantages: Plenty of violence (which some may not like)

At first sight, it would be easy to dismiss ‘Training Day’ as just another by the numbers US police movie – rookie officer working with the experienced narcotics cop, patrolling ‘the hood’ with the black and Hispanic gangs, the good cop/bad cop and black cop/white cop interaction routines, it’s all been seen and done before, right? Well, yes, but I doubt if these issues have been handled as sensitively or as skilfully ... Read review

Review of Training Day DVD by daveking

Advantages: Attempts something a bit different with a tired old formula
Disadvantages: doesn't quite pull it off

Hey, ever seen the movie about the grizzled street-wise cop, partnered with the wet-behind-the-ears rookie? Yeh I thought as much, two dozen times at least. And if you go and see “Training Day” you can add another to the list. Although as grizzled cop/rookie cop movies go it’s actually not at all bad and at least attempts to inject a little bit of originality into the formula. The movie’s USP is that all the action ... Review of Training Day DVD by harlequin21

Advantages: Powerful acting; complex, compelling storyline; beautiful cinematography
Disadvantages: Doesn't strive for great heights

...a smaller, more compacted film, Training Day reprises the cop genre into something intricate, gripping and raw. Applying for the narcotics division, Officer Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) must pass a day of training with the guidance of his superior, Officer Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington) who will test his gall and determination for the job. As the day moves on, and Hoyt goes on mission after mission with Alonzo, visiting people ranging from small-time ... Read review

So many things to happen and not long until 12
Review of Training Day DVD by ms19

Advantages: great acting, brilliant story, some funny bits
Disadvantages: none

This is the film that won Denzel Washington his oscar, so I had to see if his acting was really good in it. He is always good in the parts he takes but this is the firts time he has been in a bad part. From the films I have seen him in he is usually the good guy but not here. When I heard the part that Denzel had taken it was quite surprising, Ethan Hawke plays the part of the good guy Jake Hoyt who is a policeman and he was getting trained to ... Read review

Review of Training Day DVD by utero

Advantages: Good lead performances
Disadvantages: Runs out if ideas very quickly, loses the plot

...I sat down to watch Training Day, looking forward to a barnstorming film about the mean streets of LA with some excellent performances. Well at least I got some good performances. Detective Alonzo Harris (Washington) is not like most cop's, he talks street, has a mean streak and a laid back attitude with some strange ideas of how to bring law and order to the streets. He runs a small crew who seem to be in to the same things such as keeping part ... Read review

...for best actor. I'm reviewing training day, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke and Eva Mendez. The film was released in cinemas in late 2001 and lasts roughly 122 minutes. For me this was the film that defined Denzel, his character portrayal was something we had not seen from an actor for some time now, and the film really suited him. I remember going to watch this film in the cinema, my friends had hyped the film ... Read review

Advantages: Enbjoyable and exciting. Appearances from Dre and Snoop Dogg
Disadvantages: Sluggish start

...he is, undeniably, also in Training Day. Training Day is a Cop Drama/Thriller. The film follows a rookie LA cop, Jake Hoyt, played by Ethan Hawke, on his first day on the job as a narcotics officer. He is paired with veteran detective Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington) for a day that will make or break him. Pass the test and he becomes a detective. Fail, and its back to traffic duty. Alonzo is a cop who obeys no rules; this is because there are ... Read review

Wolves & Sheep
Review of Training Day DVD by mo79

Advantages: Realistic scenario, great performance from Washington, great production
Disadvantages: Doesn't warrant too many repeated viewings, some of the characters and parts of the story seem caricature

I've not seen very many Denzel Washington films, but those I have featured him playing clean wholesome characters, the complete antithesis of the stereotypical black role, that of a more 'attitude' one whether good or bad. Here, Washington effectively plays the gangster in cop's clothing. Not only he does revel in it, he does it so well that you actual despise and fear his character. Many of his lines were ad-libbed and his character was based ... Read review

Advantages: A surprisingly good cop thriller, good direction, superb acting.
Disadvantages: Poor finish.

...of his movies. So when Training day was released, I was keen to see it. Denzel Washington, the good senior cop, ‘training’ a rookie… should be interesting. That is where the director plays a huge nice trick. He knows that Denzel is associated with the image of a good, brave and noble person. So as the ‘training day’ progresses, through the eye of the rookie cop, we see more and more of Denzel going about all sorts of shady business. One assumes ... Read review

Review of Training Day DVD by Heidavey

Advantages: Good acting and camera work
Disadvantages: lacking in plot

I have just finished watching this movie. I didn’t plan to watch it; it was just lying around so I had a peek. Anyway the plot (ahem), goes like this; Its Jake Hoyt's (Ethan Hawke) first day in the narcotics department and he has been given a 'Training Day' to display what he has got. He is put under the supervision of Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington). When you first watch this film, you are thinking that something’s going to happen, ... Read review
