...if anything, even better.
Toy Story, the product of a combination made in heaven between Mr Disney and Mr Pixar, was soon followed up by an excellent sequel. In reality you just got more of the same (plus the introduction of Jessie the Cow Girl, Stinky Pete the Prospector and a faithful cowboy horse, plus of course the delightful Mrs Potato Head keeping her grumpy old spouse under check), but the first episode was just so bloody wonderful that there ... ...certainly got it because Toy Story 2 was quite definitely a great bit of work.
Surprisingly, the makers originally saw the film as something which would go straight to video, but in the end they saw sense and went for the big screen anyway.
The story is slight, the characterisation fairly bland, but as a whole it's just excellent, to be recommended.
The big plus point is the bad guy of the piece, with The Simpsons' Comic Store Guy replaced by ...

...is one good reason why Toy Story 2 should be hailed as the masterpiece it so obviously is - for it totally contravenes the accepted rules of Hollywood filmmaking.
For some reason I've always had this odd notion that Pixar was actually independent of Disney - I did not know until now that they were linked together. I guess I should have looked at the box a little more closely. Anyway, as it is, I can say right of the bat that this particular animation ... ...I mean Al of Al?s Toy Barn. ...the original, but I think Toy Story 2 (TS2) has managed it, at least I think it has. Most Disney sequels are destined to go straight to video, some deserve it like the dire Lion King 2. TS2 was also destined to go to video but people at Pixar realized what they had and pushed for cinema release, the down side to this was they had to upgrade all work they had done so far so the quality was good enough for the big screen plus they added a few extra ... ...on the shelves in Al’s toy barn *

As you’d expect from Pixar the animation is superb and extremely cute. My only reservations with it are the humans, I think Pixar use toys and bugs etc. as they have shiny surfaces, which are easy to render. When it ...

...for kids either. Toy Story 2 revolves around Woody being stolen when his owner goes on holiday and this time, it is up to Buzz Lightyear and his toy pals to find Woody and rescue him before it is too late (he’s gone to an evil toy collector far, far away). While he’s toy-napped, Woody happens across other toys who 'just so happens' to be characters from his old television series which spawned the entire Woody line of toys to begin with. ... ...this sequel out-performs the first Toy Story. Although, with Jessie and Woody finding one another, it does somehow distract from Buzz and Woody's friendship found in the first film, but it bonds them even tighter once Buzz and his allies rescue Woody. But this gives clearance for Buzz to fight his own daemons in the form of Zerg (his arch-nemesis). There are also the memorable scenes with slight references to 'Star Wars' and of course, we have a ...

...the release of the first Toy Story movie. It seemed as though we had gone from drawing mice with three definite circles for a head, and ducks with no trousers, to complex realistic computer animation almost overnight. There wasn’t that much in the way of commercial computer animation before the release of the film, only a few short stories, which were nowhere near as complex, and far less amusing, so it came as a real shock to me. I'm not sure how much it's selling for in the UK, but I got both movies for £19.99 (futureent.com) imported on Region 1 DVD. Toy Story 1 is based around Woody's owner getting a new toy for his birthday, Buzz Lightyear, and him becoming envious of Buzz. The story moves on to a crazy kid who lives next door who likes to destroy toys in different ways, ie. set fire to them, strap them to fire works!. Buzz and Woody end up becoming allies as they both try to escape from the neighbours house before they're next inline!!.

After the huge success of Toy Story we had to wait 5 years for the sequel. Far too often the sequel of a film is not remotely as good as the original. Apart from The Godfather 2 being as good as the Godfather I cannot recall a sequel being as good but we are not in the same territory here. Toy Story 2 was guaranteed a big audience after the first film and it did not let them down.

Toy Story 2 returns and even takes up a notch, with such life-like renderings that within minutes the play-time world of Andy's bedroom, becomes your own reality for the length of the picture.
