TOTAL RECALL There is a fairly unique equation that, rather sadly, is not used often enough in the movie business. When it is, however, it provides for some rather fabtastic cream-in-your-jeans results. It goes a little something like this: Arnold Schwarzenegger times Paul Verhoeven divided by Philip K. It makes Total Recall sound like an intellectual behemoth of twists, turns, illusions and mirrors as Quaid journeys to Mars (or not as the case may be) to find himself, but whilst it uses the template of Dick's short-story 'We Can Remember It For The Wholesale' it's nowhere near that smart. A brain implant for Arnie? Now there's an interesting thought ... a man who comes across as all brawn and no brains, although he's reputed in real life to be a diamond geezer, witty and quite intelligent ... but here it's to give him another life, not to bring his intelligent quotient up to a decent level. One of Arnold Schwarzenegger's (hope I dont have to spell that again!!) early renditions still packs a punch even in today's filming industry. ...a Phillip K Dick story, Total Recall is a movie that really stands up as one of Arnie's best. Sure it has all the usual 80's non-pc violence and language but underneath there is some great sci-fi themes being played out. The story is highly original and interesting throughout. A director like Paul Verhoven was ideal to handle the themes of the movie as he previously displayed in Robocop and here he shows himself as the thinking mans gratuitous action ...
...actor in the world but there are few people who can deliver one-liners like he can. There are some moments in the film that are pure arnie and will raise an ironic smile and sometimes a real laugh. Set in the near future, Total Recall is about a man called Dennis Quaid, living a normal life, when suddenly a "memory cap" in his brain is made to malfunction and he starts to remember who he really does, or does he? This fast paced sci-fi action thriller has many plot twists and turns, and the heart stopping special effects were wonderful for a film made over 10 years ago, if you like hi-tech gadgetry, this film has it all:- motion trackers, wall-tv, ...

Arnie is well supported by a young looking Sharon Stone and even younger looking Rachel Ticotin, and the fact paced screenplay is ably directed by Paul Verhoven, who you may recall directed "Starship Troopers" more recently. ...the extra features of: making total recall imagining total recall audio commentary from arnie and director Paul Verhoeven vision of mars feature photo gallery conceptual artwork and so much more this film throws everything at you and is a joy to watch. when the film really kicks in when quaid gets to mars the action never lets up and mutants become what feels the norm in an alternate world. look out for the fun touches put in like the d-bugger ...

...whose works are sci-fi gold, Total Recall spent around 16 years in production limbo during which time David Cronenberg was attached to direct and even penned an early draft, but it wasn't until the script landed in the hands of Schwarzenegger that the movie came to fruition. Having originally been cast for the main role in Robocop (wardrobe problems causing him to leave), he was very impressed with the final film and desired to work with Paul Verhoeven. ...
...which is still debated today, Total Recall holds a proud place as a cult classic. Although certainly not for everyone, if you're a fan of the action or sci-fi genres, this is a very unique film, one that has remained unrivalled since it wowed audiences on it's first release. Not much of Philip K Dick's original story made it into this film. After borrowing the initial concepts, Paul Verhoeven ignores Dick's largely comic narrative and invents instead a messy, violent, and ultimately slightly silly film.
