To Sir, With Love' has to be one of my favourite films of all time and I have watched it more times than I can remember. If I ever feel in need of uplifting, watching this film on DVD is sure to leave me with a feel good feeling!
The film, which is based on the novel by E R Braithwaite, tells the story of Mark Thackeray, played superbly by Sidney Poitier, an out of work engineer from British Guyana, who takes a temporary job in a tough secondary ... ...fifteen year olds just waiting to leave! No other teacher has managed to last the distance with them, and when Mr Thackeray first enters the classroom he is faced with sullen demotivated young people who are not prepared to give him a chance. He takes all sorts of flack as he attempts to teach them in a conventional way, with nothing seeming to work. Advantages: A Good Film for grown-ups Disadvantages: A little dated now.

It certainly brought back memories of my youth, fashions and music, and was a good reminder of how times have changed.
The film is set in the East End of London during the 1960's and stars Sidney Poitier as a young out-of-work engineer trying to teach a group of East End 'youths'. He takes the job to fill in time although he is still applying for engineering jobs.The pupils don't really enjoy school and they are ... ...a deeper message and tries to give an idea about the prospects of young people growing up in that era. The girls were meant to either be secretaries or to get married and have children, and the boys all tended to look forward to the prospects of a manual work. The matter of colour and race also rears its 'ugly head' and the film's Director deals honestly with that issue. A very young Lulu (aged 17) is one of the cast who is influenced by Poitier ...
